Myra Canyon trestles burned in 2003 and finds were quickly allocated for repair, reopening in 2008 at a cost of $17M.

Foot-dragging and lack of communication has brought us to this point - where $20M will be happily spent to decommission -- I can only assume -- part of the trail.

Stand up and be heard. This us unacceptable resource management. Sign the petition, donate if wish.

It's been a rough year for me with lots on the go. Work, moving, health, and so on. It's been great moving to a new location and explore local trails and discover new places, but real life can even get in the way of that. It's been a year of crazy workloads, deadlines, and schedules. Not much time left to ride, or create for that matter. But, I was able to sneak away for a much needed ride out of my new backyard. Check out my latest YouTube as I ride loop to Horne Lake on Vancouver Island.

It is with great sadness and sorry I make this post after learning of a tragic backcountry accident that took the lives of Matthew & Stacey on Aug 7th, 2025, near Trout Lake, BC on the Rady Creek FSR.

When they started filming their Toyota/Chinook build and following adventures my wife and I followed vicariously along, often laughing at their wonderful, vibrant personalities. They reminded us of our ourselves, young and in love, with the world at our feet.

Our own story started very similar: exploring the wilderness in my old Toyota FJ 40 over 35 years ago. As a fellow Youtuber, I was drawn in to their world, watching them grow as filmakers and storytellers. I personally met Matt & Stacey in Port McNeill while they were heading to Sointula Island. It was a chance meeting I will never forget.

My wife and I read the tragic news with great shock and sadness. As parents, we have no words... we are both speechless. While in shock and full of sorrow, we only have one way to console ourselves. Matt & Stacey passed away together, as a couple in love, with a passion for adventure and storytelling ~ allowing us a glimpse into their lives. They will be at rest and at peace together. They will not be forgotten. ❤️RIP❤️

A little update as and her partner Brian are making great headway along the route. Averaging about 150km/day. Currently as I post this they are at 477km, approaching 9pm, quite possibly camping near a wonderful little waterfall to lull them asleep. Here a few pictures from their second day from Upper Campbell Lake, along White River Provincial park, and the climb past Sutton Peak, Twaddle Lake and into Gold River. They had another great push on Day 3 starting with a tough little climb to Upana Caves, and then north along the original hwy 16 up past Vernon lake, and Woss. Day 4 was another good ride past the picturesque Atluck Lake and beyond. Follow them along on Trackleaders. Links in Bio.

Moving the to a Grand Depart was a tough decision as was picking the date of May 31st. Registrations are low so maybe this is too early for people to consider such a large ride -- but then again this is a photo-based race that's more like a big-ass tour for most.

Remember that you can also ride this at any time during the year as an ITT or just on your own for fun.

Let's give a shoutout for Alex Burke and Brian Schmidt who are going to be riding as an ITT pair early on May 12. Weather appears to be good and the snow pack has been low this year

Starting on the May 31st Grand Depart we have Mayella Krause from Brazil who had strong ride finishing the Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI) finishing 4th in the women's division and 16th overall. She'll be swapping her fatbike for her Juliana Quincy, gravel bike. Riding the island will be a welcome change for her.

Our own Spencer Floyd from the south Island should be at the start line too. Remember to follow everybody on track leaders and give them all a big cheer.

It's not too late to register for the grand depart and get in on the action or take it to your own pace at your own time and have fun.

Finally getting out for a rip: Between my day job and all the things that are not working inside my body lately, getting on the bike seems to be at the bottom of my list. Yeah, I know it should be at the top, but it's been like a hard 6 months. I did get out this week for a couple of commutes to work (22km each way), which is a drop in the bucket compared to my norm. Feels like I'm starting from scratch. Who else has been through the wringer lately? Or still is?

Mark it on your calendar! It’s time to organize those big summer rides or maybe even a few races. Big news for - It’s time for a Grand Depart Start. In an attempt to sandwich this ride between a few other iconic BC bikepacking rides, the Grand Depart will start as close to June as possible. For 2025, that falls on May 31st… Riders will depart the Comox Heritage Airpark at 7 am sharp. Registration is now open if you dare to put your name on the board with other hardy souls ready to take on this challenging but fun photo-based adventure ride.
