To kick off our fall series HABITAT, we’re exploring the resurgence of Tropical Modernism in interior and architectural design.

While often linked to mid-century European and Soviet Functionalism, Modernist and Brutalist architecture reached a unique apotheosis in the Southern Hemisphere. From the 1950s to the 1970s, postcolonial regions saw new prosperity or independence, adapting modernist principles to local climates, materials, and culture. The evolution of these traditions in tropical environments challenged Western architectural ethos by adapting to lush environments, promoting sustainability, and investing in architecture as an instigator of progress. Exhibitions like “Tropical Modernism” at the V&A spotlight how this approach still informs context- and climate-responsive, sustainable design today.
