I’ve been struggling to put my thoughts and emotions into words regarding recent events in Canada and the US, and while I may not get it right the first time, I feel that saying something is more important than trying to say it perfectly.
The events of the past few weeks have exposed a grim reality to the world - Racial injustice is still alive and well, and we all have work to do.
To be honest, I thought I knew quite a bit about racism and human rights. But I had no idea how racism is built into every level of our society.
That ignorance is on my white privilege.
I want to take this opportunity to apologize - It shouldn’t have taken such drastic measures to realize how little we were doing to promote anti-racism.
It’s time for BIPOC communities to stop being marginalized and attacked and finally have TRUE and FULL equality.
To BIPOC communities, I want to make it clear that I am watching, learning, and listening. I see you. I stand with you, and I support you as an ally. I am committed to doing the work, and not letting the calls for change fade away.
I believe in inclusion - that everyone is welcome, regardless of what they look like, where they come from, who they love, or what they believe.
I believe my journey to ending inequalities and racism begins with self-education. That’s why I’ve spent the last few weeks exploring, learning, and compiling a massive list of resources to begin my educational journey.
It’s a privilege to educate myself about racism instead of experience it and I am committed to amplifying black voices, having honest discussions with others and listening.
I am not by any means saying this is the right way, but after taking everything in these past few weeks, this is what feels right for me so far.
I don't want life to go back to "normal" and pray that we resume changed for the better.
BIPOC, it's your time to be heard, loud and clear, and it's time for us to listen and commit to doing better.
This is an extraordinary moment in human history. It’s an awakening born from tremendous pain, but also carries tremendous hope. @ Mother Earth
