🔹Colwood moves forward on huge oceanfront pathway spanning between Esquimalt Lagoon and Beachlands community🔹

A four kilometre long oceanfront multi-use path is one step closer to becoming reality in Colwood, thanks to a grant secured for project planning that is well underway. The path, stretching from the Lagoon Bridge to the new Beachlands subdivision, is expected to open by early 2028. More from the City of Colwood:

The City of Colwood is moving forward with plans to create a muti-use pathway along the waterfront from the Lagoon Bridge to the Beachlands.

The 4km pathway will create a safe and accessible route for people walking and cycling along the waterfront. It will guide people thoughtfully through sensitive areas near Esquimalt Lagoon National Migratory Bird Sanctuary and create an enjoyable route beyond the Lagoon washroom, through the waterfront areas of Perimeter Park and connecting to new trail networks at The Beachlands.

The City received a $6M grant for the project and began with stakeholder engagement, design, surveying, and archaeological permitting for the project. Early options focused heavily on engineering coastline areas, which added complexity to the project, resulting in escalating costs.

The plan moving forward is based on Green Shores design which redirects the focus back to using natural materials and eco-friendly techniques that work with the coastline. This means that in addition to improved safety and comfort for users, the project will help restore and protect natural areas.

What's next
Project designs are being updated to meet the required archaeological and environmental permitting processes. Final designs and detailed construction plans are expected to be complete by January 2027, followed by tendering and construction. This will put Colwood on track to have the new waterfront multi-use pathway complete in advance of the grant funding deadline of January 2028.

"Della Falls, series of three cascades from Della Lake to the valley of Drinkwater Creek on Vancouver Island, B.C. They are located approximately 37 miles (60 km) northwest of the mill town of Port Alberni and about the same distance southwest of the town of Courtenay.
With a nearly vertical drop of 1,445 feet (440 meters), Della Falls constitute the highest waterfalls in Canada. Named for the wife of Joe Drinkwater, a trapper and prospector who first visited the falls in 1899, Della Falls are formed by the glacier-fed lake. At an elevation of about 3,545 feet (1,080 meters), Della Lake lies deep within the mountainous Strathcona Provincial Park. The falls are surrounded by Big Interior Mountain (6,103 feet [1,860 meters]), Mount Rosseau (6,437 feet [1,962 meters]), Mount Septimus (6,398 feet [1,950 meters]), and Nine Peaks (6,044 feet [1,842 meters])—four of the highest peaks on the island."

⚠️ A BC Emergency Alert has been issued: All people and boaters are asked to stay off of and away from the banks of the Chilcotin River, as well as the Fraser River between the Chilcotin River and Hope!

Late last night, a massive landslide took place along the Chilcotin River roughly 22 km upstream from the Farwell Canyon Bridge. It has resulted in a complete blockage of the river, with material piling 30m high and 600m deep. Water has backed up roughly 8km behind the landslide material and the downstream riverbed is completely exposed. The risk of ecological impact is also significant.

The material blocking the river is composed of sands and clays and have the potential to erode and break down. This may lead to pulses of water and material being released, which could pose a significant risk to people and infrastructure downstream.

🚨 A Flood Warning is in place for the Chilcotin River upstream of landslide in the vicinity of Farwell Canyon.
🚨 A Flood Watch is in place for the Chilcotin River downstream of the landslide in the vicinity of Farwell Canyon and Fraser River from the Chilcotin River confluence downstream to Hope.
🚨 A High Streamflow Advisory is in place for the Fraser River downstream of Hope.
