The blacksmith shop at Westfield Heritage Village is an incredible example of an important member of any community back in the 1890s. They not only took care of shoeing horses but also hand-made many metal parts and other needs for both farming and the household.

Below, Detective Dickson (Brian Otto) and Josiah McCoy (Chad Spaulding) are waiting outside to ensure that Conestogo blacksmith, Benton Walker (Everton Wilmot) will not return after leaving for the day. It's a night scene (dusk) that was shot during the day! DOP Rob Currie changes the scene digitally during post production. It's a balancing act but quite convincing.

Pictured below, lawyer Josiah McCoy (Chad Spaulding) and Detective Dickson (Brian Otto) discuss some evidence they found in the Conestogo blacksmith shop of Benton Walker (portrayed by Everton Wilmot). DOP (Director of Photography, Rob Currie) can be seen using a 4k camera to film the scene.

Dickson's house is located in an 1895 Victorian-style house that's supposedly on David Street in Berlin (Kitchener) across from what will be Victoria Park (1896)….but is actually in Galt Cambridge. During exterior filming, actors and crew had to contend with the sound of modern-day cars, trucks, and city buses. Several takes were required to get enough different angles and shots to avoid the sound issues.

Interior shots were hampered by passing cars that could be seen through the sheer curtains of the bay window….barely but enough….zipping by on the street. They were removed digitally in post production or avoided by using a different shots.

In this scene picture below, lawyer Josiah McCoy (Chad Spaulding) talks to factory worker, Lucretia (Sarah Nairne) about her brother and his friend, Benton Walker (portrayed by Everton Wilmot). Josiah is concerned that Benton, a blacksmith in Conestogo, has gotten himself into something illegal.

The location is one of the original factory sections of the old Krug Furniture factory. In one window over to the left of this photo, you could see a computer inside! Reflected in the window, modern cars could be seen. All of which had to be digitally removed to maintain the 1892 setting.
