Tales From A Distant Land - Lyric Insights
The song had already been titled when the music was delivered and the original idea is not quite what the finalized version became.
Stemming from the song title and music the song grew out of an attempt at highlighting human trappings of lore and fable. Mythos or traditionally held beliefs were the original elements of the song's conceptualization. The influence of media, attempts to dissuade morals, and discarded time honored traditions were topics that emerged as the lyrics evolved.
The first draft was laid out in July of 2024. The lyrics were written in Welland, On. at the Lincoln Street Plaza and the Cotton Mill (a local historical heritage location). There is one 'rough' version in which some of the initial topics were hit upon, but none of this appears in the finalized take.
The second draft was where the lyrics began to make sense, not only 'sequentially', but also in story line. This was then revised and edited further to fit the musical score. The audio version is slightly different from the final written one.
'Fight or Plight' is the unmentioned subtitle to this song. It is meant to define the listener's unperceived circumstances as relayed in the lyrics.
The 'Tales From A Distant Land' is this long held belief that there is something oppressing humanity from some obscure part of the world and has been doing so since civilization's inception. It is the unmentioned understanding that some dark malicious force holds sway over our thoughts and decision making, constraining our perception of existence.
The 'Distant Land', in reality, is no further than in your own mind.
There is only one thing limiting our individual success and it is our own inability to break from these ideas. We, as a species, restrict ourselves in the belief of this opposing force when in reality this concept is engrained in us after thousands of years of conditioning.
We need someone to tell us what to do, how to act, what to believe. We forget our individuality and independence of thought, choosing to follow these perceived ancient doctrines of oppression and subjugation.
