Matt took a little tour today and asked every renovation question a person might ask, just not in a house that can answer any of them. He asked about trim that no longer counts as matter, stairs that only exist in spirit, walls that are currently optional, a ceiling that is more hole than ceiling and wiring that should probably come with a warning label. Thirty seconds of questions, zero answers, perfect summary of where we’re at.

It cost just under $15,000 to build the church and Parish House 125 years ago. The original cost sheet breaks every dollar down from the architect, the contractor, the windows, the bell work, even the vault in the Parish House.
Today you’d be looking at a cool eight to twelve million to recreate it.
I’m posting the full transcription below if you want to see exactly what they paid for, line by line.

After dealing with the dissolved beams in the basement I remembered there’s a much higher area in worse condition😕
Every time we fix one problem this house politely hands us a bigger one. I looked up today and thought… we, got some issues there.” This one will be far more complicated to repair with a 25’ drop below it 😬

The floor had… opinions today.
Now that the basement has finally dried out, the old timber is telling the truth. The rot was hiding behind years of moisture, and once it dried, the wood went crunchy and started to sag like most things do when they get old. So we added a set of shore posts to carry the load for now. This is a temporary fix, just to stabilize everything until we can rebuild this whole section properly. Old houses don’t fail all at once, they fail quietly over decades, and then one day they decide to speak up.
