As I explained to some youth who visited my studio recently, back in the day, this hefty reel of 2-inch tape represented 15 minutes and 24 tracks of audio (running at the cleaner speed of 30 ips vs 15 ips), and would account for 1/8th of an album project, since we needed 8 reels for an hour of 48 tracks. Each reel cost about $150 and weighed about 5 kg, for an impressive $1200 and 40 kg just to start your project.
