Happy pub day to Alice Chadwick's hypnotic, elegiac debut novel DARK LIKE UNDER! 🎉🎉

In the aftermath of a surprising death, students and teachers at an English school grapple with their grief. Yet the bell continues to ring, and normal life—lessons, arguments, flirtations—goes on. As the heat of the late spring day intensifies, allegiances strain and rivalries escalate, and old secrets start to surface. Set against a backdrop of strikes, economic unrest, and the stratified milieus of a small town in the 1980s, DARK LIKE UNDER thrums with the richly detailed inner lives of its varied cast of characters.

Alice Chadwick’s luminous debut captures the promise and risk of late adolescence in a profound exploration of resilience and connection, frustration and grief, renewal and the legacies we leave.

The National Magazine Awards gala is TONIGHT, and we’re thrilled that two Biblioasis authors with forthcoming books have been nominated!

Robyn Sarah, whose poetry collection WE'RE SOMEWHERE ELSE NOW will be available September 2, has a few nominated poems from The New Quarterly. These poems will appear in her new collection!

And Marcello Di Cintio, whose long-awaited PRECARIOUS: THE LIVES OF MIGRANT WORKERS is also due this fall, has been nominated in the Long-Form Feature Writing category for his piece on migrants and borders in The Walrus.

Congrats to both, and to all the other nominees!

We're thrilled to share that Lazer Lederhendler, translator of THE HOLLOW BEAST by Christophe Bernard, has won the 39th Annual French-American Foundation Translation Prize in Fiction! Congratulations to Lazer, for this well-deserved win.

Biblioasis publisher Dan Wells writes, "Lazer Lederhendler has long been one of the best translators of Quebecois literature in the world. His translations of Nicholas Dickner, Alain Farah, Catherine Leroux, Pascale Quiviger, and others rank among the best published in this country, and we’ve long marvelled at his range and dexterity. With his translation of Christophe Bernard’s Le Bête Creuse, Lazer set himself one of the largest challenges of his career, a quixotically gargantuan beast bred on joual, wordplay, and slapstick. But Lazer has delivered a brilliant rendition of the Quebecois original, and we’re so very grateful that the French American Foundation judges have honoured Lazer’s work as this year’s fiction winner."

Congratulations to Mozambican writer Mia Couto, who was recently awarded the 2025 PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature! Biblioasis has had the pleasure of publishing four translations of Couto's works, including the collections Pensativities, Rain, and Sea Loves Me, and his novel The Tuner of Silences.

The PEN judges stated that Couto "has occupied a singular place in the landscape of both African and world literature . . . [he] deserves even greater recognition on the global stage, and it is our hope that the 2025 PEN/Nabokov Award will help lift his voice across yet more borders."
