Best Canadian Series: CALL FOR 2025 JOURNAL ISSUES!

Every year, Biblioasis publishes Best Canadian Poetry, Best Canadian Essays, and Best Canadian Stories, anthologies which feature works that were published in magazines/journals/online publications the previous year.

As we look forward to the publication of this year's anthologies in November, our three editors have already begun reading for next year! To help them read and consider as widely as possible, we're asking for print and online serial publications (Canadian and International) to send us their 2025 issues featuring Canadian writers - if they haven't already! While we prefer to receive hard copies of print issues, we can accept PDFs as well.

We're specifically looking at works of short fiction, poetry, and essays written by Canadian citizens or residents, first published in serial publications in 2025. We are not soliciting unpublished works, or works only published in book form.

Please contact us at bestcanadian [at] biblioasis [dot] com for more details, and if you have any questions or would like to send us copies of your journal issues.

New Brunswick friends: the wonderful Richard Kelly Kemick will be visiting in Moncton, Saint John, and Fredericton this week for a few readings. Be sure to catch him!

Richard Kelly Kemick is an award winning poet, journalist, and fiction writer. His debut collection of short stories, HELLO, HORSE, was published by Biblioasis in 2024. He is also the author of I AM HEROD (available on audiobook), the poetry collection CARIBOU RUN, and the stage play AMOR DE COSMOS: A Delusional Musical. Richard’s limited series podcast, NATURAL LIFE, is an intimate and unexpectedly honest documentary on his cousin, who is serving a life sentence without parole in Michigan.

New on The Bibliophile: Our publisher Dan Wells remembers the late Elaine Dewar (1948–2025).

"Elaine once described herself as aspiring 'to be a happy warrior for the public good.' She was that. She was fierce, and tough as nails. But she was also a warm, beautiful person, matriarch to what I’ve learned is an incredible family, and a very good friend. She was, always, inspiring, and never more than in the last days; she approached her fate with resolve."

Happy (Canadian) pub day to the strange, wonderful BIG OF YOU by Elise Levine! 🎉🎉

In these nine stories, Levine illuminates the aspirations of women and men (and one sassy millennia-old being) as they sift through the midden of their regrets, friendships, and marriages, and act on the determination to seek fresher ways of inhabiting older selves.

Two young women hitchhike around Europe, a lurid secret between them. A casino worker navigates her once sad-sack, unlucky life. A team in space is left reeling after a colleague’s unexpected death. Ambitious brothers take to the skies in an aerostat in 19th-century Paris. BIG OF YOU contains stories of real and fantastical life, each with its own distinctive voice and wild vocabulary.

At turns playful, blistering, unabashed, these stories examine the nuanced, kaleidoscopic dimensions of character, of people driven by ambition yet contending with the hauntings of the past. Spanning various settings and time periods, BIG OF YOU captures the everyday and the extraordinary in collisions soaring and earthy, exuberant and visceral.
