We are so excited that DAPHNIS AND CHLOE by Colin McAdam is on the longlist for the Giller Prize!

A modern retelling of an ancient story; part Ovid, part True Romance, and narrated by Eros himself. DAPHNIS AND CHLOE offers a pulpy meditation on love and beauty, on people triumphing over darkness by wrestling deep within it, on the solace of art, and on the simple but profound pleasure provided to a blind old man as he holds his wife’s hand and listens to an increasingly familiar story.

Our thanks to the jurors -- independent booksellers, naturally -- and to the Giller itself for recognizing the strengths of Colin's book. DAPHNIS & CHLOE is a book quite unlike anything else in Colin's ouevre, and from anything else we've published here at Biblioasis, a hopeful book about the power of love and beauty and storytelling to create a light in the darkness, and it has as broad an appeal as anything we've published. We're grateful that this nomination will help bring Colin's gem to a wider readership.

On October 19th, Albertans will vote on whether their province should remain part of Canada, or commence the legal process to hold a binding referendum on leaving. How did we reach this point? In On Treason: Alberta Separatism, Foreign Interference, and Canada’s Survival in a Revolutionary Age, author and former international security practitioner Patrick Lennox reveals how the separatist movement is not an organic political movement, but a plot conducted by individuals tied to the global far right, in an attempt to fracture the remaining liberal democracy in North America.

Lennox—who worked to counter foreign interference for over a decade with Canada’s security and intelligence community—explains in accessible terms how the movement has been aided and abetted by foreign actors and disinformation, and enabled by a Provincial Government more aligned with the Trump Administration than with its own Federal counterparts.

He will speak with Max Cameron, a Professor in the Department of Political Science and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at UBC. Cameron’s own forthcoming book, Divided We Fall, explores the history of polarization in Canada and the internal and external forces that threaten Canadian unity. This workshop analyzes classic and contemporary short stories to examine elements unique to the form, such as character development, plot structure, and thematic depth. Learn how to focus on techniques like precise language, effective dialogue and impactful endings -- and the authors who have incorporated these techniques into their prose. Please bring a pen and notebook or laptop.

Richard is an award-winning poet, journalist and fiction writer. His debut collection of short stories, HELLO, HORSE, was published in 2024. He is also the author of I AM HEROD (available on audiobook), the poetry collection CARIBOU RUN and the stage play AMOR DE COSMOS: A DELUSIONAL MUSICAL. Richard’s limited-series podcast, Natural Life, is an intimate and unexpectedly honest documentary about his cousin, who is serving a life sentence without parole in Michigan. Richard’s latest book, a collection of essays called DECADNECE, was released in June 2026.
