EP 149 with Pat Quinn of the Center For Metal Arts joins us this week with some history of his life as a blacksmith and getting into the Center For Metal Arts. and sit down with Pat and only brush the surface of things we could ask Pat. This man is extremely well known and respected in the blacksmith for a good reason. His work ethic and quality of work combine with his honest and open personality make him one of the greats of modern day blacksmithing. Pats made a massive impact in the world of blacksmithing with the Center for Metal Arts and you can witness him in person at CanIron 2025 here in Manitoba Canada this summer Aug 7-10. Take a listen to the episode and get an idea of what Pat will bring to the event. The Manitoba Blacksmith Guild is very excited to be bringing him here for this and for good reason. CanIron 2025

That's right ladies and gents. CanIron is coming to Manitoba! The Manitoba blacksmith guild has done it. They have secured a location in Austin, MB. They have set the date, August 7-10,2025.

Right there along with this gent!

When we participate in a craft, whether that is blacksmithing, wood carving, weaving, or so many others, do we then have an obligation to that craft? If so, what would that look like and how would we go about fulfilling that obligation? Certainly I am not talking here about a formal obligation, but rather an informal or self-imposed commitment to give back in some manner.

From the beginning of my journey as a blacksmith there have been, and still are, others that helped me in some way, large or small. These people write books or magazine articles, teach classes, do live demos, and, of course, make videos. Without the information so willingly shared I doubt I would be where I am today. For that reason I do feel a personal obligation to give back to the craft and share my experience - not because I think my way is better than anyone else’s, but because it may be just what someone else needs.

I think the ways of giving back can be broken down into a few categories. One would be promoting the craft in general so that the general public understands that blacksmithing is alive and well. [Me: I’m a blacksmith. Other person: Oh, that’s a dying art. Me: Well, actually …] Obviously, helping to educate newer smiths, whether one or many, is a major contribution, as is encouraging communication and community among blacksmiths. Simply elevating the craft to reach higher potential and inspiring others to the same goal, helps keep blacksmithing from becoming stale and irrelevant. Right now my personal blacksmithing goals are shifting toward greater challenges and more complicated projects. But if I focus on those goals, am I leaving the newer smith out of the equation? A member of my household says no, you are not, because the ones who really want to learn will catch up sooner or later.

Episode 125 with Hix of Hix garage located somewhere in the USA

You read it right. A man of mystery, a man of talent and a man that I just had to get to know more about. No he isn't a blacksmith and he doesn't make knives either. He does however make some amazing art pieces. Hix is a lover of hotrod's. If you aren't a lover of hotrod's then take off eh! The hotrod and ratrod scene is very much influenced by blacksmiths and metal workers. Hix tells us about his journey into painting, pinstriping, hotrods and how it became his passion and now his business. Once again Mathieu Laroque joins as co host as he begins to warm up to the podcasting world.

Episode 125 with Collin Hayworth of Hayworth Handmade in Spring, Texas

This episode we sit down with Collin to discuss his endeavor in knife making. Like many others Collin found his interest in knives through the hit TV show Forged in Fire. He then followed the path of YouTube University to gain the ability to make some pretty sweet blades. Collin came by our radar when his account got locked out during all the hoora on Instagram with knife makers. Unfortunately it led to Collin having to start a new account which can be very frustrating. We hear about that and more. EP 123 with Lisa Huth of MetalicArt in Castlegar B.C. Canada

Back to the Great White North for this one folks. This week we bring Lisa on the show to chat artistic blacksmithing. Lisa has been at this game for a good amount of time now. Not only has she gained skills and tools for amazing art, her reputation in the community is that of an amazing artist. I have personally had a chance to see her art in person and was nothing short of amazed. Even my daughter thought very highly of it.
We dive into what got her started and where it started. We then trail off into how she runs business and of course we get a breakdown of her tools. Mathieu Laroque aka laroquez joins this show as co-host while Nick takes a bit of a break. This was his first cohosting gig so give the guy some slack. Maybe reach out to him and let him know how he did. Everyone enjoys a good reach around eh! Welcome to the team Laroquez, it's a beauty to have you on board bud.

Episode 121 with Shane Kribernegg of Friday Forge in Twin Lakes, BC, Canada

Welcome back to the Great White North ladies and gents. This week I (Lando) sat down with Shane to hear about how his journey into blacksmithing began at a very early age, but it took some push to get him interested in what his dad had already been doing for years. Shane's father comes from a life of farrier work and at one point in life Shane finally faced the hard truth that the passion for metal work ran in his blood too.

This episode was originally recorded over a month ago. Technical issues caused a large portion of the files to be lost and thus we had to sit down again which was just a couple weeks ago now. In this episode you will hear about Shane's big new purchase for his big new shop! There were some difficulties in getting the new shop going but it's up now and looking mint.

Shane is no stranger to blacksmithing outside of farrier work as well. You will hear about how he has spent some time learning from some really great smiths such as Shawn Cunningham and Jeri Sparshu as well as John Williams!

EP 120 with Andrew Cirtwell of Deer Run Forge in Burlington, Ontario, Canada eh!

Finally! Another episode unleashed to the public. This one took a while to get out, but it's a good one. We talk all sorts of blacksmithing, business and life. Andrew is definitely a gent we enjoyed chatting with and of course the love between Nick and Lando(weird to put my name when I'm the one writing this) is in full effect.
