If you’ve got a craving for all things deep-fried, National Onion Ring Day is the holiday for you! On June 22, the nation celebrates the irresistible deliciousness of onion rings—often by eating as many of them as possible. It’s unclear when onion rings were first developed, but an onion ring-like recipe appeared in an 1802 cookbook, and another surfaced in a New York newspaper in 1910. Texas-based restaurant chain Kirbys Pig Stand claims it played a big part in onion rings’ creation, and fast food restaurant A&W helped them reach widespread popularity. There is still an ongoing debate over who deserves credit for the snack’s creation, and cooks also still argue about how to best prepare and serve onion rings for the most flavorful results. Some onion rings are even made from an onion paste, as opposed to an onion ring itself! This style of preparation can make it easier to eat the rings without accidentally yanking the onion out of the fried batter. However onion rings first came to be — and however you prefer yours prepared — they’re now a beloved snack across the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, Ireland, South Africa, some regions of Asia, and other corners of the world. They’ve also inspired countless spin-off snacks, like blooming onions and Funyun chips. So no matter how you like them, grab a fried onion snack for National Onion Rings Day!

National Vanilla Milkshake Day is on June 20 and it’s all about celebrating the original vanilla milkshake. It’s made by blending milk, ice cream, and the vanilla flavoring for a classic style beverage. Vanilla is actually native to central Mexico and it’s the only fruit-bearing member of the orchid family. The first people that used the fruit of the Tlilxochitl vine were the ancient Totonac Indians of Mexico, but after the Aztecs defeated them, they no longer had sole ownership of the fruit.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL VANILLA MILKSHAKE DAY
In the beginning, the milkshake was considered an adult drink. The beverage had first appeared in print in 1885 and contained eggs and whiskey. It was described as a sturdy and healthy egg nog drink, that was served as a tonic and a drink. For as harmless as they seem now, the original milkshake wasn’t so kid-friendly. All of the fun flavorings wouldn’t come until later.

In the early 1900s, different flavors of ice cream were used in milkshakes. Vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry syrups were the first ones and they were an immediate hit. At that time, the electric blender hadn’t been invented yet, and milkshakes were shaken by hand. The drink mixer wasn’t created until 1911 and when it was, milkshakes started appearing at soda fountains which increased its accessibility.

The electric blender was created in 1922 by Stephen Poplawski, the owner of Stevens Electric company for the purpose of mixing beverages like malts and milkshakes. This handy invention took the milkshake from the soda fountain to the home and more restaurants would add milkshakes to their menus. In 1949, Dairy Queen added milkshakes to their menu and many other restaurants followed their lead.

Today, the milkshake is still going strong. While the local soda/malt shop has become a vintage novelty, people can still order this classic treat at many restaurants and ice cream parlors. While many flavors have been created since the early days of the milkshake, the vanilla milkshake still holds strong as a classic reminder of days’ past.

Cucumber Month takes place throughout June! The cooling properties of cucumbers make them ideal for the hot summer months. Its refreshing properties make it ideal for adding to beverages, to detox or just to sip and enjoy. It takes quite some time for heat to pe*****te through cucumbers which is why they are often so cool and refreshing. Cucumbers are also used for treating some skin ailments, especially when mixed with other ingredients such as aloe vera and lemon. An amazingly versatile vegetable with tons of different uses, from culinary to beauty.

HISTORY OF CUCUMBER MONTH
Cultivated for at least 3,000 years, the origin of cucumbers was India, where a vast variety of vegetables existed. Records of the cultivation of cucumbers appearing in France date back to the ninth century. Throughout the 16th century, European traders and explorers sought products of Indian agriculture. This is likely how cucumbers made their way to Europe.

Cucumbers are more than just “cool.” 95% of a cucumber is water content, making it a summertime favorite. Cucumbers are closely related to zucchini, pumpkins, and even watermelon. Cukes are a common variety of cucumber that is found in salads and grown in home gardens.

There are many varieties of cucumber; the most popular being Persian, Pickling, and English cucumbers. These are available year-round. Cucumbers are broadly categorized as either slicing or pickling varieties, with most varieties used as both. The types vary in size and shape, and the color ranges from dark green to pale whitish-green. Lemon cucumbers are found with bright yellow streaks. Persian cucumbers have edible seeds that are easy to chew and digest. The peel of these cucumbers is often waxed to seal in moisture.

English cucumbers are also known as gourmet, seedless, or burpless cucumbers. This type has tiny seeds that don’t require removal. The shape is also longer and thinner, and usually shrink-wrapped to lock the moisture in.

Cucumbers go bad in warm temperatures quickly. They can be stored in the refrigerator crisper for up to a week. Unwaxed cucumbers lose moisture rapidly and must be wrapped tightly in plastic.

Are you ready to celebrate National Cherry Tart Day on June 18 by devouring some of the best cherry tarts in your town? Yes, now is the time to paint the town red — we mean cherry red. Dedicate a few minutes of the day to pay a tribute to the lip-smacking cherry tart dessert. Originating from a tart that, once upon a time, had a meat filling, cherry tarts are the favorite of all those who prefer fruit tarts over plain custard tarts. So grab your dessert forks and get ready to satisfy your sweet tooth.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL CHERRY TART DAY
The origins of National Cherry Tart day are linked to the annual National Cherry Festival held in Michigan every year — the state that grows 75% of the U.S. cherry crop. The day was formulated and celebrated because cherries are delicious fruits that have a very short growth period. Hence, it’s not a surprise the fruit has become a seasonal hit in several regions of the country.

Cherries did not exist in the U.S. until they were brought to the land of hope by early French settlers in the 1600s who grew cherry trees in their gardens. Things evolved in 1852 when a missionary named Peter Dougherty planted cherry trees in Old Mission Peninsula. At that point in time, the trees bearing fruit was a far-fetched idea. But to everyone’s surprise, the cherry crop flourished. Seeing this, the neighbors in the area began planting cherry trees, too. This furthermore, led to the beginning of modern-day cherry production and, in 1893, the first cherry orchards were planted in Michigan.

Soon the cherry business blossomed and the industry reached great heights in the 1900s. Today, over 650 million pounds of cherries are produced in the United States, most of which are used to make scrumptious desserts.

National Apple Strudel Day on June 17 has given us an excuse to indulge ourselves with the sweet treat. Apple strudel is a Viennese dessert made from thinly rolled out dough sheets, apples, sugar, and an assortment of spices. The world-famous dish is enjoyed as both a breakfast item as well as a dessert at night. It is also paired with coffee and tea for evening snack time. It can be accompanied by a generous dollop of whipping cream or a dusting of icing sugar/cinnamon. While ‘Apfelstrudel,’ as it is called in Austrian, is a sweet dish, it can also be savory when the apple is replaced with spinach, cabbage, or other vegetables and herbs. The word ‘strudel’ comes from German, and it means whirlpool or an eddy.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL APPLE STRUDEL DAY
While the origins of the first National Apple Strudel Day remain unclear, the origins of the dish itself are also somewhat unclear. Many believe that apple strudel is a German dish, but many others consider it Austrian—some going as far as saying that apple strudel is the national dish of the country. The first written record of dessert exists at ‘Wienbibliothek im Rathaus,’ which is the Vienna Town Hall Library, from 1697. It was during the Austro-Hungarian reign of the eighteenth century in Austria that the dessert really took off with the masses. Yet, the famous apple strudel, according to many scholars, may have originated in Greece or Turkey.

Through historical records, it is believed that apple strudel’s popularity in Europe was the direct result of growing globalization. Trade routes and international travels trace the earliest records of strudel to an Assyrian manuscript from the eighth century B.C. In these papers, the dish is described as a full meal made of puff pastry layers with honey and nuts. The Mesopotamian kingdoms and the extensive usage of the Silk Road ensured the arrival of the sweet strudel to Greece and Turkey. For Greece, the inspiration led to the creation of ‘güllaç,’ which is a cornstarch pastry with the goodness of pomegranate, rose water, milk, and nuts. On the other hand, the Turkish came up with ‘baklava,’ which is a multilayered pastry sweet of a variety of nuts like pistachio and peanuts that have been roasted and cooked in a sugary syrup. Both the dishes today are enjoyed in Ramadan, which is the fasting month for Muslims. Coming back to our equally beloved apple strudel, the dough for the treat is made by repeatedly flogging the dough against a tabletop. As layers start forming, each of the layers is filled with spiced apple slices and nuts. In the traditional recipe, the prepared strudel is shaped into a swirl into the baking container. It is baked until the dough is completely cooked and takes on a golden shade.
