Eons ago, when I was a high school basketball coach, I attended a summer coaching clinic in Minnesota. They put us up in the college dorms. My roomies were three giant football and wrestling coaches from Montana. The first day for lunch break we went downtown to an all-you-can-eat buffet, four big dudes with bigger appetites. We cleaned out the Swedish meatballs pretty quickly. Day two, a repeat, only this time the restaurant was ready for us with extra meatballs and probably extra staff. Rumours are they closed the next day to let staff recuperate. That meatball binge was on my mind as I put this show together – couldn’t stop picking out “meaty” music.
You’ll get to hear a pair of tracks from the very impressive “Omni”, the latest recording by the James Brandon Lewis Quartet. This group continues to evolve with JBL’s Molecular Systematic Music incorporating a gospel music feel to much of the music. Not for comparison, but just for listening, are more freewheeling saxophonists like German reed master Gebhard Ullman, England’s Paul Dunmall with a younger generation crew and Dunmall again with fellow Brit, Alan Skidmore’s Tenor Tonic, a quartet that never recorded, yet here they are. The almost omnipresent Ivo Perelman appears in quartet fashion with Matthew Shipp, William Parker & Bobby Kapp, and Finland’s Sami Sippola is heard with Hot Heros on their latest. Violist Mat Maneri chips in with a quartet also, completing a trilogy of releases, and there’s some sublime playing by pianist Fred Hersch & guitar hero Mick Goodrick, one of those unreleased gems that pops up on ECM Records.
There’s much more to “eat” in this smorgasbord of creative & exciting music which will also be available at allaboutjazz.com in a couple of weeks.
