Over the past year, I worked through the steps to turn stinging nettle into a wearable garment.

This shirt is 100% locally made with stinging nettle and flax.

The materials were sown, grown and harvested last summer. The stocks were retted, dryed and processed in the fall. The fibre was extracted, spun and scoured in the winter. The yarn was prepped, woven and sewn in this spring.

In a world where craft traditions are shared, explored, and used as inspiration, it is essential to recognize the origins of these skills and honour the cultures from which they come.

Cultural appropriation occurs when artistic and craft practices are taken without understanding or respecting their significance, often stripping them of their cultural and historical context.

Being in relationship with the land and harvesting from it is an integral part of Indigenous life. Jennifer will talk about harvesting, the histories of colonization and how that has affected harvesting practices, and how that relates to current day land based knowledge.

In 2020 the Pembina Fibreshed launched its first Flax to Linen project. The goal was to grow fibre flax varieties in small community plots throughout the region to explore the viability of growing flax and processing linen locally.

Shannon Bahuaud participated, and documented the project as part of her masters thesis. The result of this documentation is this beautiful book.

Part reflection from the various community participants, and part instruction for small-scale flax production, the book highlights the hopes and challenges of creating a local fibre economy.
