200 Kaduna Varsity Lecturers Resign as ASUU Strike Threat Looms

More than 200 lecturers at Kaduna State University (KASU) have reportedly resigned, with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) warning that industrial action could follow if outstanding concerns are not addressed.

The KASU-ASUU chapter attributed the lecturers’ departure to poor working conditions and the delay in implementing the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, which took effect in January 2026.

The union has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Kaduna State Government and university authorities to begin implementing the agreement. Failure to meet the demands could lead to a total and indefinite strike at the institution.

ASUU says the continued loss of experienced academics could affect teaching, research and the overall development of the university.

Anambra Council Chairman, Foundation Step In to Support Orphaned Debate Star
A young Nigerian whose education was disrupted after losing both parents is set to receive major support following intervention from the Chairman of Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, Chibueze Ofobuike, and the Okwumereze Foundation.
Richard Emmanuel Ekene Ike, described as a talented student and outstanding public speaker, reportedly dropped out of school after the death of his parents and faced serious difficulties with accommodation and other basic needs.
Following public attention to his situation, the Aguata council chairman said his team would support Richard by sponsoring his WAEC examination, providing accommodation and supplying other educational needs.
The Okwumereze Foundation, led by Evans Emesim, popularly known as MC Okwumereze, has also pledged to sponsor Richard's JAMB examination and provide full financial support for his university education.
Plans are reportedly underway for Richard to return to secondary school in September 2026, subject to passing the school's entrance examination.
The council also plans to provide him with educational materials, including a smartphone, computer and books.
The development has attracted praise from Nigerians, with many seeing the intervention as an encouraging example of how individuals and organisations can help talented young people overcome difficult circumstances.

Police Restrict Amotekun, Vigilantes From Osun Governorship Election
The Nigeria Police Force has directed Amotekun, vigilante groups and other non-state security organisations not to participate in security operations during the Osun State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
According to the police, groups such as Amotekun, hunters’ associations, neighbourhood watch organisations and other community-based security outfits are not authorised to es**rt election materials, guard polling units, establish checkpoints or carry arms during the election.
The police warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against deploying or sponsoring such groups for election-related activities. Anyone who violates the directive could face arrest and prosecution.
The Force said election security would be handled by constitutionally recognised security agencies, with personnel deployed across the state to protect voters, electoral officials, materials and collation centres.
The police also urged all stakeholders to avoid violence, intimidation, vote buying, ballot snatching and other acts capable of disrupting the election.

2027: Atiku Raises Concern Over Outdated BVAS Technology

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns about the operating system reportedly being used on Nigeria's Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Vanguard, Atiku questioned the use of Android 10, which he said reached end-of-life status in 2023 and no longer receives regular security updates. He warned that using outdated software for election technology could create cybersecurity and operational risks.

He also raised concerns about the security of voter accreditation data, the transmission of polling-unit results and the biometric features of the BVAS.

Atiku called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upgrade the system and properly test any updated technology ahead of the 2027 elections.
