They say construction has higher rates of ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia. That makes sense. These are the “get it done” folks—problem solvers who figure out how things work, tear them down, and build them back better. They use motors, levers, wheels, chains, and whatever mechanical advantage they can imagine to make the hard work a little easier.

Often seen as the lowest rung on the ladder, they are employed just enough to miss out on wellness supports, but not paid enough to access help on their own. Their work is seasonal, task-based, and layoffs often hit during the holidays. For those who thrive on movement and purpose, the downtime can bring on depression and negative coping. It is a fight to make it to the next callout.

Still, when the crew is back, there is a rough welcome, a shared rhythm, and a sense of belonging. There is purpose in this precarious toil.

Take care of your wellness. Whether it is stretching on the job, staying active during layoffs, or checking in with a counsellor, your wellness matters. You matter.

WEHWEHNEH BAHGAHKINAHGOHN BUILDING TURNS 99 YEARS OLD

The former Hudson’s Bay Company building in downtown Winnipeg officially opened 99 years ago, on November 18, 1926!

Nearly a century later, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization is proudly transforming this building into Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn—a place that reflects who we are, what we have overcome, and the future we are building for our 32 member Nations.

A site that once symbolized colonialism is now being reclaimed by:

• A 77 per cent Indigenous workforce
• A major redevelopment led by First Nations vision
• A new purpose grounded in community, culture, and economic reconciliation

On this anniversary, SCO acknowledges the history of this building and celebrates the new path our Nations are carving forward.

From colonial legacy to First Nations leadership, Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn is rewriting the story of this landmark.

To learn more about Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn, visit our website: https://scoinc.mb.ca/wehwehneh-bahgahkinahgohn/
