At Bay Press

At Bay Press At Bay Press is a member of the Association of Canadian Publishers, Association of Manitoba Book Pub

We are a grassroots publisher formed in 2008 that believes in the arts and the power of the written word. We strive to seek out new work by undiscovered authors and artists along with those who are already established and bring their work to light. Our volumes are made right here in Canada, some of which are constructed by hand. All of our publications receive our utmost attention, time and love.

Dr. Peter Newman, author of ‘In Harm’s Way’, will be signing copies of his book at Munro’s Books on October 10, 2026! Stop by, say hi, and pick up a copy with a specialised autograph from the award-winning physician himself! 🫀🩵

October 10, 2026. 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Munro’s Books; 1108 Government St., Victoria, BC.

“Newman writes unforgettable stories of humanity that span continents and cultures, from Canada to the Caribbean and the Middle East, and from the Arctic to the Amazon to Africa. He has practiced comprehensive, cradle-to-the-grave medicine in peacetime and war, and is well known for his humanitarian work. He has also been sought after as an expert to assess other doctors’ standards of care.

Writing of his own doubts and feelings, Newman reflects on what it means to be human and vulnerable—for his patients, and himself. ‘In Harm’s Way’ is a blend of medical dilemmas and vivid journeys. The gripping encounters reveal a dedicated doctor who reaches out to connect with the hearts of strangers, and who treats the whole person in an era where technology is crowding out the human side of medicine.”

Susan Wismer, author of ‘Hag Dances’, will be reading from her poetry collection on September 11, 2026, @ 7:00 p.m. at The Poetry Barn! Oh, and this is a free event!

➡️ Curious as to what ‘Hag Dances’ is about? Read below!

To change and heal takes great courage. To reconcile is to truly face yourself and ask the questions: Why am I angry, shameful, hateful and prejudiced? Why does fear have control of me so profoundly? Why is it so easy to move to prejudice, to be manipulative, to think of myself as better than? Susan Wismer’s new collection of astounding poetry reconciles identity and truth, if truth can even be found.

When Tom, an art house aficionado, returns to his hometown to attend a film studies conference, he discovers that his ex-girlfriend Esme has recently married their former prof, Cinny. Contact with the couple, gossip with his friend Nasim, and flirtation with a Hollywood bit player known as Lady Lex draw Tom into a noirish plot that may have Chabrol-ish consequences for his rival, and permanently distance him from his fiancée, a skilled harpsichordist named Ciana. As he navigates shifting islands of personal memory, Tom begins to wonder if life is not just a retcon (or the most contrived form of retroactive continuity). The price of admission includes an amateur opera matinee, a pub discourse on Godard-McBride Breathless Paradox, a giallo nightmare, and a hypnagogic hallucination inspired by a Tarkovsky retrospective, all threatened by the skintight spectre of the next superhero franchise.

“We are after things that have absolutely nothing to do with the zeitgeist…We want to turn over stones and see what’s crawling underneath them – to discover new voices, new identities, new thoughts.”

At Bay Press Publisher Matt Joudrey shared his thoughts and insights on the current state of Canadian indie-publishing—what needs to change, insightful recommendations, the importance of writers and their craft, and the future of indie-publishing.

“At Bay Press takes its name from a Will Eisner ‘The Spirit’ comic strip entitled ‘Fox at Bay.’ Joudrey says that the tale of a cornered criminal felt like an apt metaphor for what happens when you paint a creative into a corner: they bare their teeth.“
