in 2022, country music lost one of its greatest voices, Loretta Lynn, at the age of 90.

From humble beginnings in Kentucky to country music royalty, Loretta told the stories of everyday women with honesty, humour, and plenty of backbone.

Her signature hit, "Coal Miner's Daughter," inspired the acclaimed 1980 film starring Sissy Spacek. And in 1975, she stirred up Nashville with "The Pill," a cheeky anthem about birth control that some radio stations refused to play.

Loretta wasn't afraid to sing about subjects others wouldn't even discuss!

A trailblazer, a storyteller, and a woman who helped change country music forever.

in 1986, CBS news anchor Dan Rather was attacked on a New York City street by a man repeatedly demanding, “Kenneth, what is the frequency?”

The bizarre encounter became part of pop culture history when R.E.M. turned the infamous phrase into their 1994 hit “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”

Only in rock & roll could one of the strangest questions ever asked become a radio staple.

in 1970, the world lost Janis Joplin to a he**in overdose at just 27.

Janis was nearly finished recording Pearl when tragedy struck. Her band had recorded “Buried Alive in the Blues,” but she never returned to add her vocals. Her final recording,“Mercedes Benz,” made the album instead.

Released posthumously in 1971, Pearl topped the charts, along with her unforgettable rendition of “Me and Bobby McGee.”

Her death came just 16 days after Jimi Hendrix's. Jim Morrison would follow the next year. Three legendary voices, all gone at 27.

Janis may have left us too soon, but that unmistakable voice still gives us a little piece of her heart.

in 1963, a teenaged Eric Clapton walked into London's Crawdaddy Club in Richmond to watch The Yardbirds perform.

Just a week later, the band invited him to join. He accepted, making his debut on October 20th.

A pretty wise career move for a young guitarist who would eventually become known as Slowhand!

in 1992, Sinéad O’Connor delivered one of the most controversial moments in Saturday Night Live history.

After performing Bob Marley's "War," she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II in protest against child abuse in the Catholic Church.

No applause. Just stunned silence.

NBC received thousands of angry calls, and Sinéad faced enormous backlash.

Decades later, with widespread abuse exposed, many came to see her protest in a very different light.

Sinead wasn't afraid to make people uncomfortable. And that night, she certainly got their attention.

in 1954, blues-rock legend Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas, Texas. Today, he would've turned 72.

With his blistering guitar solos, famously heavy strings and unmistakable Texas blues sound, Stevie Ray took inspiration from Jimi Hendrix while carving out a legacy entirely his own.

Tragically, we lost him in a helicopter crash in 1990, following a concert alongside Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and his brother Jimmie.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, Stevie's influence continues to inspire generations of guitarists.

in 1945, a 10-year-old Elvis Presley made his first public singing appearance at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair & Dairy Show.

His song of choice? “Old Shep.” His result? Fifth place!
Not exactly a royal debut, but that little kid would go on to change music history forever.

Wonder whatever happened to the four kids who beat him?

Elvis is second from the right in the photo.

in 1941, Chubby Checker was born Ernest Evans in South Carolina.

With a little help from Dick Clark and American Bandstand, Chubby turned Hank Ballard's "The Twist" into a phenomenon, topping the Billboard Hot 100 in both 1960 AND 1962!

It remains the only recording to reach no. 1 in two separate chart runs.

And the best part? "The Twist" sparked a dance craze where you didn't even have to touch your partner.

Kinda like my middle school prom!

in 1971, "Rod the Mod" pulled off one heck of a double!

Rod Stewart scored his first solo U.S. no. 1 with "Maggie May / Reason to Believe," kicking off a five-week reign atop the charts.

Meanwhile, his album Every Picture Tells a Story hit no. 1 in BOTH the U.S. and UK, cementing his status as a solo superstar.

Two countries, two charts, one VERY good year for that unmistakable raspy voice!

in 1951, Gordon Sumner was born in Wallsend, England. A black-and-yellow striped sweater earned him the nickname Sting, and the rest is rock history!

From fronting The Police with classics like Roxanne and Every Breath You Take to launching his solo career with The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Sting has spent decades making musical magic.

A Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Grammy winner and Oscar nominee, he's certainly left his mark.

75 years old and STILL stinging!
