The AFC/M23 armed group says it has begun withdrawing its forces from the strategic town of Uvira in eastern DR Congo, following a request by United States mediators involved in efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

The development is being closely watched as a potential step toward reducing tensions in South Kivu, though its impact on security and civilians remains uncertain.

This is for history lovers! On a day like this, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a briefing note highlighting the urgent situation of the Congolese Tutsi refugees from the Mudende camp in Rwanda.

Following an armed attack on the Mudende camp a few days prior, thousands of refugees had fled to the nearby Nkamira transit center, which quickly became severely overcrowded and insecure.

This date reflects the ongoing, critical security and humanitarian challenges that persisted in the immediate post-genocide and First Congo War era. It illustrates the cross-border displacement and instability affecting Rwanda and the DRC, as international bodies and governments grappled with finding a safe, long-term solution for refugees caught between different conflict zones.

Congo has seen many agreements, many signatures, many promises, but the eastern part continues to bury its children. Washington may have celebrated a diplomatic success, but peace is not built on applause.”

A new peace agreement was signed in Washington, but can a document truly save lives when the conflict's root causes remain untouched? 😔

This piece cuts through the diplomatic fanfare to ask the tough questions: What happens when leaders meant to defend their nation repeatedly fail? And can paper ever stop bullets?

Six months from now, the real test begins. Don't let this be another quiet entry in the long archive of failed promises.

The cease-fire commitment cemented by the Washington Accord is facing its most severe challenge yet in the eastern DRC.

Recent actions around Uvira Falls suggest the regional framework is under immense strain.

This is more than a skirmish; it's a critical test for peace in the Great Lakes region.

Read the official statements issued by the alliance. Are official statements from the M23/AFC rebels impacting the accord's future?

Can a paper stop bullets?

The new deal for Congo is full of beautiful words, but critically empty of guarantees. No timelines, no transparency, no accountability.

We need more than political acrobatics—we need binding action.
