This is for history lovers! On a day like this, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a briefing note highlighting the urgent situation of the Congolese Tutsi refugees from the Mudende camp in Rwanda.

Following an armed attack on the Mudende camp a few days prior, thousands of refugees had fled to the nearby Nkamira transit center, which quickly became severely overcrowded and insecure.

This date reflects the ongoing, critical security and humanitarian challenges that persisted in the immediate post-genocide and First Congo War era. It illustrates the cross-border displacement and instability affecting Rwanda and the DRC, as international bodies and governments grappled with finding a safe, long-term solution for refugees caught between different conflict zones.

The Accords specifically aim to address the fundamental causes of the prolonged instability in the Eastern DRC.
