Apple is set to enhance its Siri voice assistant and operating systems by incorporating OpenAI’s ChatGPT, aiming to advance in the AI landscape.
The tech giant revealed the Siri revamp and additional features at its yearly developer conference on Monday.
This initiative is part of “Apple Intelligence,” a new personalized AI framework designed to simplify user interaction with Apple devices. The forthcoming updates to iPhone and Mac operating systems will facilitate ChatGPT integration through a collaboration with OpenAI.
ChatGPT will also augment other functionalities, such as text and content creation, with a beta version slated for release in the fall.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, expressed that this development would elevate the company’s offerings as he inaugurated the Worldwide Developers Conference at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.
The implications of the OpenAI and Apple partnership are significant. Although Apple is known for its proprietary approach to product development, the incorporation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology was highly anticipated.
This move is somewhat atypical for Apple, which has traditionally maintained strict control over its ecosystem.
Google and Microsoft have recently been under the spotlight for inaccuracies in their AI offerings, prompting Google to retract a feature in May following widespread attention to its flawed responses.
Historically, Apple has restricted its customers to downloading apps solely from its App Store, citing security concerns, and has limited web browsing to its native Safari browser. This stance shifted only when EU regulations necessitated a change.
The collaboration with OpenAI may indicate Apple’s acknowledgment of the formidable capabilities of ChatGPT. While Apple has hinted at future integrations with other products, specifics remain undisclosed.
Additionally, Apple has announced the UK release of its mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, on 12 July, following its US debut in February.
Other notable features introduced on Monday include:
- Text messaging via satellite
- Scheduled message delivery
- Head gesture controls for AirPods Pro (nodding for “yes” and shaking for “no”)
- A universal password app
- Enhanced privacy options for apps, including Face ID and passcode locks.
