Agribusiness: We've attracted N46.6bn investments, supported 46,000 smallholder farmers, OYSADA DG says

The Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) and Executive Adviser to Governor 'Seyi Makinde on Agribusiness and International Cooperation, Dr Debo Akande, said on Wednesday that the state government has attracted about N46.6 billion investments into the state through agribusiness.

He maintained that Governor Makinde's vision to expand the state's economy through agribusiness has fructified, with the state having accessed close to $170million in agribusiness and international development funds, while about 14 large processing companies have also come into the agribusiness space in the state.

Dr Akande stated this at the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governor's Office Briefing Room, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, noting that the state has been able to achieve its deliverables in the agriculture and agribusiness sector, including international development resources mobilisation, development of agriculture enablers such as industrial hubs, roads, rural security as well as policy and legal instruments.

He added that the state has equally been able to achieve its vision of supporting smallholder farmers, growing medium agribusinesses to large businesses, supporting youths and women in agriculture, opening a new frontier in value addition and also increasing livestock productivity and its value chain.

Akande noted that the state has developed a framework for Livestock Value Chain, as it is constructing a Livestock Transformation Centre, which will ensure that the best cows are produced in the Fasola Hub, while the same initiative will be repeated in the other agribusiness hubs.

According to Akande, the Oyo State Government has also trained 5,020 youths in different areas of agribusiness, with about 1,000 of them with agribusiness enterprises set to benefit in an Oyo State Government/FCMB-facilitated support initiative to the tune of N1.5 billion in the next few weeks.

He added that the state has also supported 46,000 smallholder farmers through OYSADA, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Agric-Credit Corporation of Oyo State, while the construction of several important roads and the ongoing construction of feeder roads have also enabled the state's leap in agribusiness.

Akande also listed the construction of the Fasola Agribusiness Hub, which has been designated as the first Agricultural Transformation Centre in Nigeria with close to N17 billion investments from 14 new agribusiness companies cultivating close to 950 hectares and processing cashew, cassava, tomato as well as close to 1,000 lactating cows within the Fasola Hub as another major achievement of the administration.

He maintained that about 8,200 smallholder farmers have also been integrated with the investors to ensure a reliable supply chain.

He said: "Fourteen new agribusinesses are in Fasola, with some of them into crop production, some are into processing, while one is into equipment leasing. As of today, 950 hectares of farmland have been cultivated. If you go to Fasola now, you can only use drones to see the cultivation of crops as of today, and these are just done by four companies.

“If I need to do 950 hectares, I would need 950 smallholder farmers to do that and I would be the one to provide fertilizer, seed and tractors for them. But these companies are the ones paying the state government to use that facility and they are using all their money to do that. This is what you call agribusiness and that is what you have in Fasola.

"Also, a commercial-scale production of greenhouse tomatoes is ongoing there and the tomatoes coming out of the place are already being supplied to retail shops and markets. I buy my tomatoes at Fasola now. All the tomatoes I have been using for the last one year, I have been buying at Fasola and it is available for people to buy for consumption. The good thing about using a greenhouse as we see in Fasola is that it is the way it is being done anywhere in the world. Agriculture should not be seasonal; it should be something you can do consistently throughout the year, whether it is raining or not.

"This particular model we have in Fasola shows that as far as we are concerned, it may not be enough for the whole of the state as we have to expand through the use of the private sector, but this has proven to be the right model. We can have tomatoes all year round and the idea is that it is coming from here, not elsewhere.

"If we continue to support this approach in agribusiness, let us imagine we now have 1,000 of these greenhouses, you can imagine the volume of the tomatoes we will be producing all year round. It is not just being produced for consumption alone but being processed as plum.

"What Fasola has done is to create what we call a pilot; to show that it is possible. Now, you would see more of that in other places

Oyo State Council of Obas Bill takes a new dimension as citizen drags Speaker and Clerk of Oyo Assembly to Court.

In a bid to deepen citizens participation in governance and hold public officials accountable, an indigene of Oyo State & public intellectual, Prince Adetayo Adekunle has dragged the Oyo State House of Assembly, it's Speaker and Clerk to court over the recently passed Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs Bill 2025.

The Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs Bill was read for the third time by the State Legislature on May 20, 2025.

It would be recalled that on May 22, 2025, Adekunle, in the exercise his rights as a citizen, invoked the Freedom of Information Act to demand for certain documents relied upon by the House in the passage of the Obaship Bill. The request, which was neither acknowledged nor responded to by the Assembly within the timeframe provided by law, has now led to full-blown litigation.

In an originating summons (a copy of which was sighted by our correspondent) with Suit No: FHC/IB/CS/60/2025 brought pursuant to SECTION 1(3); SECTION 7 (5); & SECTION 20 OF THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT, 2011; SECTION 6(6) (B) & SECTION 39 OF THEg 1999 CONSTITUTION OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA (AS AMENDED); ARTICLE 9 OF AFRICAN CHARTER ON HUMAN AND PEOPLE’S RIGHTS (RATIFICATION AND ENFORCEMENT) ACT CAP 10, LFN 1990 AND UNDER THE INHERENT JURISDICTION OF THE HONOURABLE COURT by his counsel, Prince Afeez Kilani Esq, at the Ibadan Division of the Federal High Court, Adekunle contended that access to information and records of public institutions play a very vital role in the level of enlightenment and awareness of a citizen.

Thereafter, he prayed the court for the following reliefs:
1. A DECLARATION that the failure of the Defendants to accede to the request of the Plaintiff as contained in the letter dated 22nd May, 2025, is wrong in law.
2. AN ORDER of mandamus directing and or compelling the Defendants whether by themselves and/or their agents to disclose to and or make available to the Plaintiff the information requested as contained in a letter dated 22nd May, 2025, addressed to the 2nd Defendant and copied on the 3rd Defendant.
3. AN ORDER of the Court directing the Defendants to jointly and severally pay a fine of N500,000.00 for wrongful denial of the Plaintiff's right of access to information sought pursuant to the Plaintiff's application dated the 22nd May, 2025.
4. Award of the sum of N500,000.00 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only) in favor of the Applicant being the cost of this litigation.
5. Any further order(s) the court may deem fit and proper to make in the circumstance of the case.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Oke-Ogun Forum Ignites Firestorm with Call for Rotational Council of Obas Chairmanship among all zones

The Oke-Ogun Development Consultative Forum (ODCF) has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to prioritize fairness and inclusivity before assenting to the newly passed bill on the composition and hierarchy of the Council of Obas and Chiefs in the state.

The Forum, in a letter to the Governor, signed by its President , Ahmed Raji (SAN); Secretary-General, Adebimpe Aderounmu; and Publicity Secretary, Prince Remi Adegbola, urged the government to avoid marginalisation in the restructuring of the leadership of the council.

The Forum acknowledged the Makinde administration’s strides in reviving the council, which had been inactive for over a decade.

“We commend your courage to reconstitute the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs. It is a bold move not to be taken for granted,” the letter stated.

However, ODCF noted that the amendment process should not leaveOke-Ogun region behind.

“The current amendment of the Chiefs Law deserves an all-inclusive approach in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice, which your administration stands for,” it added.

The group lamented that several memoranda and petitions advocating the inclusion of deserving traditional rulers from Oke-Ogun had been ignored by successive administrations.

“Were it not for your sense of fairness, becoming a beaded-crowned Oba from Oke-Ogun would remain as difficult as a camel passing through the eye of a needle,” the group emphasised.

ODCF also questioned the historical basis for ranking Obas by income, describing it as a colonial administrative relic.

“The categorisation of Obas by earnings was never intended as a hierarchy. It was merely an instrument based on revenue generated in a domain.

“It is time to abandon this flawed legacy and embrace inclusivity based on effectiveness and modern governance,” the letter explained.

In its proposal, the Forum recommended a rotational co-chairmanship structure for the Council, ensuring that each of the five geo-political zones — Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Ibarapa, and Oke-Ogun — has a representative.

“As the permanent chairmanship of the council is being liberalized, it will only be fair that each zone has a co-chairman. It is unjust for Oke-Ogun to be excluded,” the letter stated.

The ODCF also pointed out the inconsistencies in representation within the council.

“While some zones have more representatives than their local governments, Oke-Ogun remains underrepresented. We plead for an increase in the number of permanent representatives from our region,” the letter said.

Referencing history, the group recalled how as far back as 1976, names of prominent Oke-Ogun monarchs such as the Alado of Ado-Awaye and Elero of Ilero were submitted for council inclusion, yet remain excluded.

“This omission must be corrected in the interest of justice,” the Forum argued.

The letter concluded with a firm pledge of support for the governor’s developmental agenda.

“On behalf of the good people of Oke-Ogun, we assure your Excellency of our continued support and remain committed to the prosperity of Oyo State,” it said.

ODCF urged Makinde and the Oyo State House of Assembly to give the appeal their urgent and favorable consideration.

The Okere of Saki, Oba Khalid Olabisi, has raised red flags over the Obaship amendment bill, describing it as a misrepresented document and warned that, it could lead to the marginalization of other zones in Oyo State.

Speaking during the Beere Festival celebrations on Friday,Oba Olabisi expressed his concerns about the bill, citing a lack of adequate consultation and public hearing before its passage. He urged the authorities to halt the consideration of the bill and engage in thorough consultations with stakeholders.

The Okere of Saki specifically objected to a provision in the amendment that lists some High Chiefs who are members of the Olubadan- In-Council as members of the Council. He described this as an aberration in culture and tradition, emphasizing that it would undermine the dignity and authority of other High Chiefs in other zones.

Oba Olabisi also expressed concerns about the marginalization of the Okeogun zones council of Obas and Chiefs, stating that they are being relegated to the background and excluded from key decision-making processes. He emphasized that Ibadan high chiefs who are members of the Olubadan-in-Council are not superior to other Okeogun high chiefs.

“There is a need for thorough consultations and stakeholder engagement in the legislative process which underscores the importance of preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the various zones in Oyo State”, he stated.

Oyo 2027: I’m One of Capable Gubernatorial Hopefuls From Oke-Ogun Zone - Olaniyan

As the call for power shift and rotational governorship continues to gain traction in Oyo State, former Deputy Governor, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan has positioned himself as one of the capable gubernatorial hopefuls from the Oke-Ogun zone ahead of the 2027 elections.

Olaniyan made this declaration during an Iftar programme held at his country home in Igboho, Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State. The event brought together some news men and supporters underscoring the growing momentum behind Oke-Ogun’s quest for the governorship.

Speaking at the gathering, Olaniyan emphasized that the struggle for an Oke-Ogun indigene to become the next governor of Oyo State in 2027 takes top priority. He stressed that while he is personally interested in contesting, his ambition remains secondary to the overall goal of ensuring the zone finally produces the next governor.

“It is no longer just a mere agitation; it is an indisputable fact that the movement for an Oke-Ogun governor has begun earlier than ever before,” Olaniyan asserted.

He reaffirmed his commitment and readiness to enter the race but maintained that the overarching goal is justice and fairness in Oyo State’s rotational governorship system. According to him, the peaceful and civil advocacy for an Oke-Ogun governor aims to highlight the need for equity in the state’s political structure, ensuring that the marginalized zones have a fair shot at leadership.

On the prerequisites for the governorship seat, Olaniyan confidently stated that Oke-Ogun has no shortage of qualified candidates, both at home and in the diaspora. He emphasized that the zone is more than ready to produce a competent leader who meets all the necessary requirements to govern Oyo State effectively.

With a touch of humour, Olaniyan remarked that even if the zone produces nineteen aspirants, he is prepared to be the twentieth—signaling his unwavering determination to be part of the historic push for an Oke-Ogun governor.

His statement reinforces the growing political movement within Oyo State, as stakeholders from Oke-Ogun continue to press for their long-overdue turn at the helm of governance.

Olaniyan And Oyo 2027 Guber Race - Adesola Yaqub

The good people of the pacesetter state should do everything humanly possible to rescue the state from vultures. Our founding fathers would be in a state of sadness with the present situation of the legacies they struggled to build.

All indices to measure good governance have shown that the state is in a mess and this was the singular reason why *Rauf Olaniyan*, the former deputy governor was labelled a critique, as he believes that power should be accountable to the people. Power needs a voice of wisdom and truth, that was his stance in the administration, which they detest.

The education system in the state is in a sorry state. Local government funds have been massively mismanaged without transparency and accountability. Health sector is crying for help.

Light up project now disburse darkness. Legacy landed properties and amusement parks have been converted to private use in all sorts of guise and land grabbing is now the order of the day. Insecurity reigns, farmers have abandoned farms for fear of kidnapping and power in the state is now converging to authoritarianism and citizens with divergent views being locked up with reckless abandon. Commercial and economic activities are in comatose, citizens are reduced to paupers, effects of which is stampede and avoidable waste of lives. We cannot continue this trend and there’s an urgent need for us to call for and work for a change.

This beautiful state deserves a leader that is forward looking, a visionary with transformative leadership qualities, built on decades of experience, expertise and capacity to lead the people to transformation and prosperity. For a balanced, people-orientend and development-driven Oyo come 2027, *Rauf Olaniyan* is the most appropriate servant for the job.
He remains the face of hope and courage. This God blessed state deserves the best.
