A lot of aspiring authors come to us saying they want to “find a publisher,” but what many don’t realize is that finding a publisher isn’t as simple as submitting your manuscript somewhere.

It’s a layered process that often starts with securing a literary agent first, or, depending on your goals, finding a small or independent press that accepts direct submissions.

The best way to advocate for yourself—and for your book—is by understanding the publishing landscape. And that’s exactly what we’re here to help you do.

If securing a literary agent is about getting someone to represent your manuscript, think of us as the team that represents you while you find that agent. Through mentorship and hands-on support, we help you research and identify the right agents, refine your query letters and submission materials, and get your manuscript ready to put its best foot forward.

The first book we ever published at Our Galaxy was Three Brave Stars by Robyn Spodek-Schindler.

Back then, we were still running as a small traditional press. I knew immediately that Robyn’s story needed to be in the world. It held the kind of tenderness and truth that only comes from someone who has lived the grief they’re writing about. But I didn’t know just how much I’d need this book—until three months after its release, when I lost my own mother.

I suddenly found myself navigating my own grief while holding space for my three-year-old to understand what it meant to lose someone you love. Robyn’s book became a gentle guide, a tool that made something unspeakable just a little more possible to speak about.

Even after Our Galaxy transitioned out of traditional publishing, we knew we couldn’t let go of Robyn’s work. Some stories are too important.

Read the full interview to learn more about Robyn, her journey through grief and art therapy, and how Three Brave Stars became more than a book—it became a hand to hold for families walking through loss. 🌟

Publishing a poetry book isn’t the same as publishing a novel or memoir. It comes with its own set of traditions, expectations, and challenges, and understanding those differences is key if you want to do it right.

Most mainstream publishers consider poetry a “niche” genre. Literary agents rarely take it on unless it’s tied to a hybrid project or a big platform. And yet, poets continue to publish to build community and carve out space in an industry that wasn’t designed with us in mind.

That’s why the path to publishing poetry looks different, and why it demands more strategy. Knowing your options is the best way to advocate for your work, protect your voice, and build something lasting.

📖 Want to understand how it all works? Our blog How to Publish a Poetry Book: What Every Poet Needs to Know breaks it all down—from what literary agents actually do, to how to format and launch your book independently.

✨ And if you haven’t already, check out Why Publishing Poetry Is Harder Than Other Genres (But No Less Worth It) for an honest look at how the publishing industry sidelines poetry, and why we keep writing and publishing anyway.

Because poetry deserves to be read. And you deserve to be supported.

Poetry is not unmarketable—it’s undervalued.

The publishing industry has long struggled to understand how to nurture poetry. It doesn’t promise big sales or viral trends. It doesn’t conform to the familiar beats of narrative or nonfiction. But that doesn’t mean it’s not in demand.

Poetry thrives in the places publishers often overlook: in community spaces, classrooms, social media, stages, and timelines. And yet, because it doesn’t fit easily into the commercial mold, it’s often passed over by agents, underfunded by presses, and shelved with low expectations.

This carousel explores why publishing poetry is harder than other genres—and why it’s still deeply worth pursuing. You see, poetry has never just been about sales. Whether traditionally or independently, publishing poetry is a powerful act of reclamation.

If you’re a poet navigating the industry—or dreaming of seeing your words in print—Our Galaxy is here to help. We specialize in working with women and marginalized writers to turn your story into a beautiful, intentional book.

❌ Silence and complacency are not an option—and poetry has always taught us how to speak up, how to bear witness, how to act.

Poetry is not just the record of resistance. It is the resistance. 💪🏼

I met Kaniz Hossain through the NYC poetry scene, specifically at Restless Open Mic, and from the moment she stepped on stage, I was hooked. Her cadence is unforgettable. The kind of poet that makes you turn to the person next to you and say, ‘Listen to this...’

Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of watching Kaniz evolve, first with her published chapbook onto a full collection of poetry, and now as the curator of her own creative space, House of Khaos. Kaniz has shown up for her craft time and time again—and for good reason. She knows the power of her words and the space they create for others.

I can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next. Read more about her beyond the narrative up on our blog now.

Phillis Wheatley. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Georgia Douglas Johnson. Audre Lorde. Nikki Giovanni. Gloria Anzaldúa. Janice Mirikitani. Mitsuye Yamada. M. NourbeSe Philip. Amanda Gorman. Fatimah Asghar. Warsan Shire.

What these women have in common isn’t just craft—it’s courage.

Their poems have traveled further than their bodies could ever go. Across timelines, classrooms, borders, and movements. Across languages, griefs, and generations. They weren’t just writing verse—they were writing themselves into a world that tried to deny their existence.

📚 In our latest blog, The Politics of Poetry: Why the Margins Have Always Been the Center, we explore how poetry has always been political—because it has always existed in systems that tried to erase those who wrote it.

Poetry is cultural memory. It’s survival. It’s protest. And for those who live at the intersections of identity and resistance, it’s power.

I met Dani by happenstance at a Colored Colors open mic on Long Island where she performed a poem, “Those of Us Born in 1992,” that shook me to my core. It was, and still is, one of the most impactful pieces of poetry I’ve ever had the honor of being present in a room for.

When she came to Our Galaxy for help formatting her debut poetry collection, I was so grateful to have been a small part of its production process. Dani is a testament to a multi-faceted creative. From visual arts to poetry and performance, she touches ground in lanes that need her perspective now more than ever.

Her journey centers around mental health, free-flow expression, and speaking her truth by way of words and watercolor. Up on our blog, you can read more about her story, learn more about her book, Nothing At All or All At Once, and take a peek into the essence of her art through our Beyond the Narrative series.

Some connections are meant to happen. ✨ I met Angelina Young when we were vendors set up next to each other at a Golden Light Poetry event, and I got to experience her magic firsthand. From the way she speaks about dreams to the way she trusts her creative instincts, her work is deeply immersive and uniquely her own.

Angelina’s writing and podcast, Journey Through the Dreamscape, invite us to explore the unseen, question the world around us, and embrace the unknown. She’s also Our Galaxy Publishing’s resident book designer and formatting expert, helping authors transform their words into beautifully crafted books ready to be shared with the world.

In this conversation, we dive into the forces that have shaped her storytelling and how she’s learned to trust her voice in a world that often tries to quiet it.

Angelina doesn’t just write about dreams; she follows them, trusts them, and reminds us to do the same. 🌙✨

Jessica and I met as most poets do: by bearing our souls to strangers at an open mic hoping to feel seen, to connect, to belong.

I think we offered all three of those things to each other. When she came to us for guidance and design support for the rerelease of her first book, Manipulated, that connection seamlessly carried on.

What I respect most about Jessica is that she never shies away from the work. She’s always willing to push her own bounds, to take feedback, to keep showing up despite the fear. Each time, she finds a unique way to involve and collaborate with her community, uplifting them along the way.

Knowing Jessica’s experiences with mental health and the truth that lives beyond her poetry, I wanted people to learn more about her ‘why.’ I wanted them to see what can come of releasing oneself from the confines of what is considered conventional.
