You've probably seen the burning globe: "Earth is on track to become uninhabitable and cross a climate point of no return, scientists say."

There is a real study behind it. Eight senior climate scientists, peer-reviewed, published in One Earth in February.

It doesn't say that.

It doesn't say Earth is becoming uninhabitable. It doesn't say warming is exponential. And warming is not outrunning the models — the newest ensemble actually runs about 23% hotter than what's been observed since 1970.

What it does say is stranger and more useful: we don't know where the thresholds are, and that's exactly why we should be careful. Since 2022, the estimated tipping point for coral has moved down. So has the Amazon's. So has West Antarctica's. Every revision has come toward us, not away.

One of them we've already crossed. It isn't the ice.
