October 6: A Defining Day in Egyptian History
🇪🇬 OCTOBER 6: A DEFINING DAY IN EGYPTIAN HISTORY

The 6th of October is one of the most significant dates in modern Egyptian history, commemorating the 1973 October War, when Egyptian forces launched a surprise attack across the Suez Canal in an effort to recover territory lost to Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War.

In the 1967 Six-Day War, Egypt lost the Sinai Peninsula to Israel. The loss had significant military, economic and national consequences for Egypt.

Following the death of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, President Anwar Sadat pursued a strategy aimed at recovering the occupied territory and changing the regional political balance.

On October 6, Egyptian and Syrian forces launched coordinated attacks against Israeli positions.

Egyptian forces began their assault across the Suez Canal, supported by artillery and air operations, and succeeded in breaching the heavily fortified Bar Lev Line.

The operation became known as Operation Badr and marked a major turning point in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The attack took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, and during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The 1973 war had consequences far beyond the battlefield. It contributed to a major shift in Middle Eastern diplomacy and eventually helped create the conditions for the Camp David Accords of 1978 and the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty of 1979.

Under the peace process, the Sinai Peninsula was progressively returned to Egyptian control, with the final withdrawal of Israeli forces completed in 1982, apart from the Taba area, which was returned in 1989 following arbitration.

Egypt continues to commemorate October 6 as Armed Forces Day, honouring the role of the Egyptian military in the 1973 war.

The date has also been preserved in Egypt's geography and infrastructure, with landmarks such as 6th of October City and 6th October Bridge carrying the name of the historic date.

October 6 therefore represents more than a military anniversary—it remains an important symbol of Egyptian national history, sovereignty and the country's journey from conflict toward peace.

PHARAOHS CONDUCT ZOHAR PRAYER AHEAD OF ZAMBIA ENCOUNTER

The Egyptian National Futsal Team conducted the Zohar (Dhuhr) prayer on the pitch ahead of their international friendly against the Zambia National Futsal Team on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in Cairo.

The players took a moment to observe their midday obligatory prayer before beginning their national assignment against the Chipolopolo.

Zohar, also known as Dhuhr, is one of the five daily obligatory prayers observed by Muslims and is performed after the sun passes its highest point.

The moment highlighted the importance of faith and religious observance to the Egyptian players, who made time for prayer despite their international football commitments.

Egypt went on to defeat Zambia 7–2 in the first of two preparatory matches ahead of the 2026 Africa Futsal Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The two sides are scheduled to meet again in their second friendly on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

ZAMBIA FUTSAL DELEGATION PAYS COURTESY CALL ON ZAMBIAN EMBASSY IN CAIRO

The Zambia National Futsal Team delegation has paid a courtesy call on the Zambian Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, as the team continues preparations for the 2026 Africa Futsal Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The envoy, led by Head of Delegation David Simwiinga, visited the Embassy yesterday.
Mr. Simwiinga was accompanied by FAZ Head of Administration Francis Limande, Futsal Team Manager Phillemon Chakoleka, team security personnel Joseph Tembo, and FAZ media personnel Kirby Kaoma Musonda.
During the visit, Mr. Simwiinga conveyed greetings from Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Keith Mweemba to the Zambian Embassy.

Futsal Team Manager Philimone Chakoleka also took time to brief the Embassy on the background and development of futsal in Zambia, as well as the progress and achievements recorded by the national team.

Welcoming the delegation, Zambian High Commissioner to Egypt, H.E. Major General Topply Mulambo Lubaya (Retired), expressed happiness at the team's presence in Egypt and congratulated the players and officials for qualifying for the Africa Futsal Cup of Nations.

H.E. Ambassador Luhaya said the decision to camp in Egypt and play preparatory matches against the Pharaohs was an important opportunity for the team to gain valuable experience ahead of the continental tournament.

He noted that Egypt has well-developed sporting infrastructure, academies and systems across various sporting disciplines, and encouraged the Zambian team to observe and learn from the best practices during their stay.

The Ambassador further urged the delegation to make the most of the exposure and interactions in Egypt, describing the camp as an opportunity to acquire additional knowledge and experience that could contribute to the development of futsal in Zambia.

He congratulated Zambia on qualifying for the AFCON and wished the team success in Morocco.

Before the meeting concluded, Ambassador Luhaya also highlighted the Government's commitment to supporting different sporting disciplines under President Hakainde Hichilema's New Dawn Administration.

He said the support being rendered to the futsal team, including the opportunity to camp in Egypt before travelling to Morocco, demonstrated the increasing attention being given to sports beyond football.

“All sports under the New Dawn Government have been given full support. Look at how futsal has been supported to come all the way to Egypt and then Morocco. It was impossible in the past, but results are being seen today,” Ambassador Luhaya said.

He cited the Embassy's recent interaction with delegations from hockey and handball, saying the development demonstrated that various sporting disciplines were now receiving greater support.

Ambassador Luhaya said the Government should be appreciated for creating opportunities for athletes in different sports to represent Zambia internationally.

The meeting was also attended by Minister Counsellor and Head of Chancery Lydia Kwibisa Matapo, Brigadier General Morris Njelekwa, First Secretary Defence, and Veronica Kaimba Chiluba, First Secretary Political and Administration.

The Zambia National Futsal Team is currently in Cairo for preparatory matches against Egypt ahead of the 2026 Africa Futsal Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held in Morocco from 12 to 21 October 2026.

CALL TO CLEAN UP MIDDLEMEN AROUND PASSPORT AND NRC OFFICES

As authorities intensify efforts to clean up Lusaka and improve public order, attention should also be given to the alleged agents and middlemen operating around passport offices and National Registration Centres.

Authorities may need to investigate reports of individuals approaching members of the public and offering to facilitate access to government services, particularly where such activities may exploit or inconvenience citizens.

A cleaner and more orderly Lusaka should also mean ensuring that public service centres are accessible to citizens without unnecessary interference from unofficial intermediaries.

The focus should be on protecting citizens, improving service delivery and restoring order around government offices.

📸 | ZAMBIA FUTSAL TECHNICAL BENCH UNWINDS WITH PADEL TENNIS

The Zambia National Futsal Team technical bench took some time away from futsal to relax and unwind with a game of padel tennis in Cairo, Egypt.

The recreational activity provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to refresh, bond and take their minds off the pitch as they prepare for tomorrow’s second international friendly against the Pharaohs.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow as Zambia continues preparations for the 2026 Africa Futsal Cup of Nations in Morocco.

HH OFFICIATES AT SECOND LOBITO CORRIDOR COORDINATION MEETING

President Hakainde Hichilema has officially opened the Second Lobito Corridor Coordination Meeting in Lusaka, bringing together Zambia, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and development partners.

The meeting, held at the InterContinental Hotel in Lusaka, is focused on strengthening regional cooperation and translating commitments under the Lobito Corridor into increased investment, stronger regional trade and job creation.

President Hichilema said Zambia remains committed to improving connectivity and reducing transport costs to unlock greater economic opportunities for the region.

He said the partnership should deliver tangible benefits to citizens while contributing to the implementation of the Government's Grow Zambia Agenda.

The Lobito Corridor is a strategic regional transport route intended to enhance trade and connectivity between Zambia, the DRC and Angola, while facilitating access to regional and international markets.

President Hichilema said Zambia will continue working with its regional partners and development partners to ensure that the corridor contributes to sustainable economic development and improved livelihoods.
