Former WB CM Mamata Banerjee’s niece dies by su***de - Was removed from Teacher's job due to allegations of "Illegal Appointment"
Bristy Mukherjee, 28, a niece of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, allegedly died by su***de in Kusumba village, Rampurhat, Birbhum, on Tuesday.
She lost her job as non-teaching staff at Bolpur Upper Primary School in March 2023 after nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching employees were dismissed for illegal appointments through favouritism and alleged cash payments. The Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court struck down the appointments.
Her father, Nihar Mukherjee, is Mamata Banerjee’s maternal cousin and a local Trinamool Congress leader. Sources said Bristy had been depressed since the court verdict. Her name appeared 608th on the list of those who lost jobs.
The family said she had resigned after working one day on health grounds.
The case stems from the 2016 School Service Commission cash-for-jobs scam, a major corruption scandal during Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year tenure. Then education minister Partha Chatterjee, party MLAs and senior officials were arrested.
The Supreme Court on Monday extended until 31 May the deadline to accommodate qualified staff appointed without unfair means.
