I promise, you’re a leader and I’ll prove it

Whenever conversations about leadership start, many people zone out. You hear leadership and immediately imagine your supervisor at the office, your team lead in church, CEOs in their corner offices, presidents, people who speak from podiums with microphones etc

So you quietly excuse yourself from the room. But that’s where we get it wrong.

Leadership isn’t about having people reporting to you.

Leadership is influence!

It’s how your actions shape people’s decisions knowingly or unknowingly.

Let me break it down

You recommend a movie, and your friend watches it.
You suggest a restaurant, and someone tries it.
You read a book, share the lessons, and someone goes looking for that book.

That small pull, that subtle way your voice moves someone, that’s leadership.

Leadership is when your younger sibling copies how you talk.
Leadership is when your colleague asks, “How do you stay so organized?”
Leadership is when your friend calls you every time life becomes confusing because somehow, you always have clarity.

You’re influencing people without a title.
That makes you a leader already.

You don’t become a leader when you get a position.
You get a position because you were already leading.

If leadership is influence, then your job is to develop the kind of influence that makes people better because they met you.

I had the pleasure of hosting another insightful episode of Property Talk on Monday, and let me tell you, this one was both so funny and eye-opening.

Our guest, Arc. popularly known as The Crazy Architect, did not hold back. The topic was:
“Designing for Function and Beauty: How Architecture Shapes the Way We Live”, and Faith brought it home.

He shared practical, down-to-earth insights that could get any young architect up on their feet and rethinking how they approach design.

One of the highlights of the conversation was when we explored features in buildings that are aesthetically pleasing but not necessarily functional, those “it looks good, but it makes no sense” design choices. We all had a good laugh because, honestly, we’ve all seen those kinds of spaces.

Another powerful moment came when Faith talked about his mentor, Zaha Hadid, the legendary Iraqi-British architect known for defying the odds and redefining modern architecture.
I went digging afterward, looked up some of her works, and I understood why she’s called The queen of curves.

Zaha didn’t just design buildings, she reimagined possibility.

It was such a refreshing conversation, part laughter, part learning, and 100% worth it.

I want you to read this scripture with a different lens. You’ve probably read it before but, read it again.

Here it is👇

“If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion.

There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body.

Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion - do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers - most of which are never even seen - don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?

What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

“Susan, how much do you get paid to work on CANA?”

The first time I heard that question, I smiled because it reminded me that not everyone understands what CANA Fashion Show really is.

CANA isn’t a job, it’s a mission.
It’s 100% volunteer work and I don’t get paid a salary.
But I get paid in visibility, in growth, and in refined skill.

With CANA, there’s always something to do and every time, it demands a different version of your best self.

For me, that’s usually my writing and communication skills coming alive.
My task at CANA can go from crafting social media content, to website copy, newsletters, PR pieces, and even billboard messaging

Today, it was my storytelling that took center stage.

We wanted to tell the CANA stories, the real, human stories of people whose lives have been touched and transformed by this platform.

So I stepped into that creative zone again:

✅Ideating the shoot (we went with a documentary-style approach)

✅Reaching out to and coordinating interviewees

✅Crafting the right interview questions

✅Ensuring every gadget and team member was in sync

✅And then the actual shoot.

By the end of the day,
It was another reminder that when you show up with your skill even in volunteer spaces,you never truly work for free.

Because every experience like this deposits something valuable back into you.
