About Danûk:
Between 1902 and 1912, Austrian and German researchers used a phonograph to record Kurdish shepherd and wedding songs in what was then Mesopotamia, and a Syrian priest singing in Jerusalem, and stored the cylinders in archives in Vienna and Berlin. As they rearranged these songs with the musician and producer Michael League (bandleader of Snarky Puppy), the Kurdish quintet sought to rediscover their Syrian homeland in a spirit of appreciation and affection, and to cross boundaries in both the musical and political sense. The recordings for »Morik« are structured around sacred, solemn and often polyphonic singing, the poignant sunds of the saz and electric guitars, and incisive rhythmical accentuations.

The event will feature recitations of Sun Ra's poems, as well as original works by the participating artists, taking place at our favorite club in nyc . Get ready to immerse yourselves in the rhythms of celestial verses, hosted by poet, activist, and educator Mahogany L. Browne, with music provided by poet and educator DJ Jive Poetic.
Limited edition LPs and CDs of "My Words Are Music" will be available for purchase for the first time this evening! Tickets to the event will be available on October 25 at winterjazzfest.com

Out today! 💥 Istanbul-born performing artist, producer, composer and instrument builder Berke Can Özcan shares new single ‘Red Pine Bridge and The Crystal Clear Dead-End’ featuring Brooklyn-based baritone saxophonist Jonah Parzen-Johnson.

On ‘Red Pine Bridge and The Crystal Clear Dead-End’, Özcan’s dreamlike vibraphone, voice and playful percussion open the track over a bed of looping, circling saxophones before letting loose in an instrumental frenzy as slick drum breaks, keys and Parzen-Johnson’s reed solo embellish the second half. The single takes its name from Özcan’s hiking expedition through the long demanding terrain of the Lycian Way trail in Türkiye. He explains further “upon reaching the riverbank & finding it flooded, and impossible to cross, one might assume it's a Crystal Clear Dead-End. Just when you think it's all over, a massive red pine topples and forms an impeccable bridge.”

This is the second single from Özcan’s forthcoming album ‘Twin Rocks’ (out November 10th). This follows the lead single “Snake Behind Valley featuring trumpeter Arve Henriksen,” which Uncut magazine called “languid, experimental soundscaping” and received radio support from the likes of Jez Nelson (Jazz FM) and Twisted Soul.

About the new single Özcan says: “Snake Behind Valley” earned its name from a section of the Lycian Way trail in Türkiye where I frequently encountered snakes. While the presence of a snake behind something often creates tension, I strangely never felt that way in this scenario. With the goal of reaching the twin rocks at the path's end, I found myself embodying the steadiness of a rock.
The Snake Behind Valley trail segment and the Twin Rocks destination provided the inspiration for the lyrics. To be like twin rocks implies embodying your significant other within the same entity, whether that's a sibling or a beloved partner. Sharing a single form signifies that promises made within oneself bind both individuals. Any harm affecting one also resonates with the other. Therefore, this track evokes the sensation of holding your significant other's hand and harmonizing as a single being.

Mastered by three time Grammy winner Dave Darlington, each track on this ethereal album mirrors a different aspect of the journey to the Twin Rocks, meticulously composed by Ozcan, Jonah Parzen-Johnson and Arve Henriksen with each section of the trail in mind. The album is infused with melodic bird songs and sound walk memories that add depth and texture to the ethereal soundscape. Ozcan’s array of self-crafted instruments made out of bamboos, soda bottle caps, straws, house keys, terracotta flower pots alongside with his long time companions like his steel drums, chimes, gongs, and vibraphone, serve as the medium through which he expressed the reflections of his encounters in his own world of rhythm and melody.

Famous for his many collaborations with innovative improvisers such as Marshall Allen, Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Istanbul-born performing artist, producer, composer and instrument builder Berke Can Özcan forms a new musical partnership with critically acclaimed Norwegian trumpet mastermind Arve Henriksen and Brooklyn-based baritone saxophonist Jonah Parzen-Johnson. "Twin Rocks" immerses the listener in a mesmerizing soundscape that echoes the wonder and mystery of the Lycian Way trail in Türkiye leading to the ancient Lycia.
This collaboration weaves together a tapestry of sonic explorations that capture the essence of Özcan's journey. The ambient-jazz album's delicate balance between organic sounds and electronic manipulation creates a dreamlike atmosphere that transports the listener to the rugged terrain of the Lycian Way.
Turkish composer Özcan lays down ethereal, dreamlike electronic tinkering and tape loops on Snake Behind Valley before delicate percussion and heavy synth lines meet expressive trumpet solos from Norwegian player/collaborator Arve Henriksen.
About the album, Özcan says “Twin Rocks” took almost two years to complete and I am proud of this one. I had to chop piles of wood, rode the black bike for many kilometers near those rocks, transcribed many bird songs into melodies, did a lot of digging in the old cassette tape shelves but it was worth it all.”
