Sopore Fruit Growers Call for Train Services, Protest Enters Second Day

Sopore, Sept 15: A peaceful protest was held at Asia’s second-largest fruit mandi in Sopore, where growers and dealers expressed deep concern over the continued blockade of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The protest was led by the President of the Fruit Mandi, Fayaz Ahmad Malik, who revealed that thousands of fruit-laden trucks remain stranded due to frequent highway closures. He estimated the losses at around ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 crore, calling the situation alarming for Kashmir’s fruit economy.

Malik appealed to the administration, particularly Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, to allow a two-day window of uninterrupted truck movement toward Jammu to prevent further spoilage of perishable fruit stock.

The growers also pressed for the immediate restoration of train services from Sopore, underlining the mandi’s crucial role in sustaining the region’s fruit export market.

In solidarity, all fruit dealers and growers from Sopore participated in the demonstration. The mandi has remained closed for two consecutive days as a mark of protest. Growers warned that if their demands are ignored, they will escalate the agitation with family sit-ins and intensified demonstrations.

GR Beigh Memorial Foundation Holds Barefoot Awareness March Against Drug Abuse in Gurez

With support from Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, the initiative under Nasha Mukti Abhiyan draws participation from locals, students, and civil society members

Bandipora, Sept 14: The GR Beigh Memorial Foundation, with the support of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Mr. Anshul Garg, on Sunday organised a barefoot awareness march under the banner of Nasha Mukti Abhiyan at Dak Bungalow, Dawar, in Gurez area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, also joined the march, which witnessed active participation from locals, students, and members of civil society.

The march, led by Foundation Chairman Ishtiyaq Beigh, carried the slogan of building a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir and aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse.

Speaking to the media, DC Bandipora Indu Kanwal Chib said the rate of drug abuse in Gurez valley remains low, and efforts are being made to ensure it stays that way. “We are holding regular meetings to prevent drug addiction among our youth. Engaging them in sports and constructive activities through initiatives like Mission Yuva is proving very effective,” she said.

The DC also highlighted the broader social impact of drug abuse. “Addiction not only destroys individual lives but also weakens families and society as a whole. Awareness is the first step toward prevention. It is encouraging to see community-led organisations like the GR Beigh Memorial Foundation taking such initiatives in remote regions like Gurez. The administration will extend full support to such campaigns so that together we can protect our youth from this menace,” she added.

She further appealed to parents, teachers, and community elders to remain vigilant and guide young people toward positive and healthy activities.

Chairman Ishtiyaq Beigh expressed gratitude to the administration, especially DC Bandipora, and the people of Gurez for their support. He said the Foundation has been consistently working to promote education, social awareness, and youth empowerment in Bandipora and adjoining areas.

“Drug abuse is one of the most alarming threats facing our younger generation today. Unfortunately, even remote areas like Gurez are not untouched by this problem. Through this foot march, we want to send a strong message that society will not tolerate the spread of drugs in our villages and towns,” Beigh said.

He added that the Foundation is planning a series of awareness programs in schools, colleges, and community centers to educate young people about the harmful effects of drugs. “Our aim is not only to create awareness but also to build platforms where youth can engage in sports, culture, and skill development so that they remain away from destructive habits. We also want to work closely with rehabilitation centers to ensure that those who have fallen prey to addiction can return to normal life with dignity,” he noted.

Beigh further appealed to government departments, NGOs, and religious leaders to join hands in this campaign. “This is not just the responsibility of one institution. It is a collective responsibility, and only by working together can we ensure a drug-free future for Kashmir,” he said.

DC Bandipora Assures Action on Illegal Mining in Gujan Tulail

Bandipora, Sept 13: Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, while responding to a question on illegal mining in Gujran Tulail, said that local senior citizens had raised concerns about unregulated mining in the area. They informed her that tippers were entering residential spaces, causing damage to nearby houses.

“I personally visited the area and witnessed the situation. I assure you that I will look into this matter,” she said.

The DC explained that Bandipora is the only district among Jammu and Kashmir’s 20 districts without a regulated mining block. “This is because Bandipora has a rich aquatic presence, and mining activities could cause serious harm to fish and aquatic life. To protect this ecosystem, no mining blocks have been permitted here,” she added.

She further stated that proposals for mining blocks have already been sent to higher authorities for environmental clearance. “If approval is granted, the process will move forward accordingly,” Chib said
