His oxygen levels were dangerously low, and his coughing fits kept getting worse. The nurses told us to keep the room quiet and calm, but he kept mumbling the same word over and over.

We thought maybe it was a son. Or an old friend from the war. But when I leaned in and gently asked who Murphy was, his cracked lips moved just enough to whisper, “My good boy. I miss my good boy.”
That’s when it clicked.
I called his daughter, who was still on the road, driving in from another state. I asked her if Murphy was a dog.
Her voice cracked.
“Golden Retriever. Thirteen years old. We had to leave him with my brother while Dad’s been in the hospital.”
It took a few calls and more than a few raised eyebrows, but the charge nurse made it happen.
And a couple hours later, through all the machines and monitors, in came Murphy—calm, gentle, and wagging his tail.
