Follower's Story: Recognizing the Signs and Finding Strength

I first met him while my father was buying a boat. He was the salesman, an middle aged man—or so I thought at the time. After the purchase, I jokingly asked if he was going to take us out to dinner, and surprisingly, he said yes. Though he promised to call later that evening, I didn’t hear from him.

A year and half later, while going through old voicemails, I found one from him. I was visiting the area again, so I decided to give him a call. We ended up going out to dinner, and it was a wonderful evening with good food and conversation. At that time, I was separated from my husband, who was living in a different state.

As time went on, the boat salesman and I grew closer, talking every day. He seemed like a genuine person—someone respected by others. I fell for him, and he said he felt the same about me. With my marriage already over in my heart, I started the divorce process. Little did I know, divorcing after 15 years wouldn’t be a quick process.

During that time, my relationship with him continued to blossom, and he gave me overwhelming attention, which swept me off my feet. I discovered that he wasn’t quite as old as I initially thought—he just dressed in a style that seemed older. Though he wasn’t exactly my type, the attention he gave me was something I hadn’t experienced in a long time.

But slowly, things started to change. He made small demands, like asking me not to wear perfume in his car. Soon, his demands became more frequent, and I noticed that he treated women of different races differently, often being more respectful to white women. It was confusing, but I reasoned with myself.

Then came the first major incident. One night, we were out, and he became upset because I was talking to a man he had introduced me to. His demeanor changed completely. He stormed out of the restaurant, leaving me behind. When I followed him to his car, he began swearing at me. This man, who presented himself as godly and respected, was now someone I hardly recognized. He then dragged me out of the car, threw me onto the street, and drove off.

I was left to get an Uber home. Later, he called to apologize, blaming his behavior on too much alcohol. I forgave him, but in hindsight, I shouldn’t have. My ex-husband had never treated me this way, and yet, I was in a vulnerable place.

We continued our relationship, and his charming, gentlemanly persona returned. But as time went on, more red flags appeared. He refused to admit when he was wrong, and his need for control intensified. The final straw came one night after dinner at his place. A small disagreement turned violent, and he pushed me so hard that I flew across the room. I got up and confronted him, but it only escalated. He dragged me outside, threw me across his front yard, and left me bruised and shaken.

I ended up in the ER, where the staff took pictures and documented my injuries. Although they urged me to press charges, I was too embarrassed. But that night opened my eyes. I realized I had been ignoring the signs all along.

The moral of my story: When you see the signs, believe them and run. Never allow yourself to become so vulnerable that you ignore the truth. With the help of God, I made it out, and today I’m happily single and thriving. I recently attended the 2024 Democratic Convention and have fully immersed myself in my career.

To anyone reading this, if you find yourself in a similar situation, please seek help. You deserve better, and there is always a way out.
