“I love Mondo Mondo jewelry. I’ve loved them for a while. I have a heart pendant necklace with a bunch of different gems on it that I literally wear every day. Everywhere I go, it’s such a conversation piece.”

“I’m currently re-reading all of Nora Ephron. I do that once every couple of years. I go through everything she’s ever written. I love her so much.”

“I’m watching the Christopher Guest movies, like Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show...they’re my holy grail of movies.”

“I love lipstick in Avenue, a brown-y red. A makeup artist gave it to me like three years ago, and I’ve gone through so many of them since. It’s this cool 90’s red, not a true red.”

“I’m a big vintage shopper, and I got these vintage mules on eBay. I am wearing them to death, so I want to get as many more of them as I can. “Years ago, in previous generations, episodes like the abortion episode would have been handled as serious and major. The things that would have ordinarily been considered really big, dramatic story points...just exist, for this generation. The concept of coming out is far less of a big thing now than it was ten years ago. That’s what’s really interesting about what we’ve done on the show, what the writers have done on the show, in terms of s*x. The writers have done such an incredible job of reflecting how these are not contentious story points and are just part of someone’s identity—and not their entire identity. It’s a really cool way of reflecting the generation.”

That very year, she starred in the off-Broadway play The Wanderers at the Roundabout Theatre with Katie Holmes. And now, Freyer breaks out as Billie➖a lovable character with a lot less handle on her life in , the Gen Z hit show that’s the talk of every town to Tiktok. Jenny Slate on writing her latest book, Lifeform➖

“I was pregnant and imagining my head kind of split at the jaw, and this column of water is flying at my body, sending itself down into my body, towards where I was making a life form. I put that piece in the center of a big empty space in my mind. Then, if anything felt like it could, in any way, be paired with it➖even if clashing patterns, so to speak➖I’d work on those. I had about 108 pieces open at one time, and I would work on what was interesting to me. Then I started organizing them into phases, something that was much simpler than what I was trying to do, and that felt really good. It was a process of, first, expunging, getting things out of my mind, and then, allowing the clog to go away, allowing myself to feel. I was really keeping an eye on the self-critic that isn’t useful in the creative process; the Meanie that’s mean…”

Cover star Jenny Slate on her role in critically acclaimed series, Dying for S*x, currently streaming on ➖

‘I felt really enrobed in my character. Especially towards the end, when we really took off all the makeup, for the most part. I thought of her look, with her dark, dark hair hanging down, as, this is Nikki➖and these are Nikki’s clothes➖for when she’s doing movement exercises with her theater group. It’s a look not meant to broadcast the way that she’s falling apart. It’s appropriate for how she needed to move in her space, for being open to what’s going to happen to her. She’s not going to try to dress herself up for some other life, because this is what it is. When we wrapped, I knew I was going to do this, I’d been talking about it for like a month➖I thought, I’ve got to cut all my hair off. I don’t think I can like look in the mirror and see myself as Nikki anymore.”
