Osun Election: I’m Having Dinner With Someone From the White House This Evening — Singer Davido updates concerned Nigerians

Nigerian Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has disclosed that he will be having dinner with someone from the White House, hours after publicly writing to United States President Donald Trump concerning the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.

Davido made the disclosure during a recent live session, saying, “I’m having dinner this evening with somebody from the White House as well.”

The remark comes shortly after the singer appealed to Trump and the international community to pay close attention to the August 15 Osun governorship election, citing concerns over possible tension, vi%lence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process.

Sowore Vows to Restore Fuel Subsidy If Elected President

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to restore fuel subsidy if elected president, arguing that the policy itself is not inherently harmful but that its administration has been problematic.

Sowore made the declaration during an interview while outlining his economic plans and responding to questions about the future of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

Asked directly whether he would reinstate the subsidy, the AAC candidate said, “I would bring back subsidy.”

He argued that the Federal Government had not completely eliminated subsidies but had instead changed the areas in which they were applied and the terminology used to describe them.

According to Sowore, the government continues to subsidise petrol and other aspects of the economy because of Nigeria’s inadequate domestic refining capacity.

He also claimed that the government was effectively subsidising the naira, arguing that such interventions had helped influence the exchange rate.

Sowore linked the removal of fuel subsidy to the worsening economic conditions experienced by Nigerians, including the depreciation of the naira and rising living costs.

He maintained that subsidy should not automatically be regarded as a bad economic policy, noting that governments around the world provide various forms of support to vulnerable populations.

“What everybody has agreed happened to subsidy is not that subsidy is bad, because there’s no country in the world that don’t subsidize their poor,” he said.

Sowore also criticised the level of poverty and food insecurity in Nigeria, arguing that the country needs to reconsider economic policies that have contributed to hardship.

“Optics don’t feed people,” he added.

Security Forces Arrest Three Suspected K@idnappers of Enugu Catholic Seminarian, Recover Ransom

Security agencies in Enugu State have arrested three suspected members of a k√idnapping g√ang linked to the August 2 ab¢duction at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Inoya-Affa, Udi Local Government Area, recovering the ransom reportedly paid to secure the victims’ release.

The operation was conducted jointly by the Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Forest Guard and other security agencies.

During the operation, the security forces recovered four AK--47 rifles, seven m@gazines and 133 rounds of a-mmunition.

One suspect was reportedly k@illed during a g√un battle with the operatives, while three others were arrested and paraded at the DSS headquarters in Enugu on Monday evening.

The operation also led to the rescue of the two remaining v-ictims of the August 2 attack, seminarian Lawrence Igbo and Emmanuel Onwudi.

Speaking during the parade, Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the suspects were tracked with the aid of the state’s technology-driven security infrastructure.

Mbah said the ransom paid as part of efforts to secure the v-ictims’ release was fully recovered during the operation.

He added that the rescued v-ictims had identified the arrested suspects as members of the gang allegedly responsible for their abduction.

Qatar Says Dialogue Is Only Way to End US-Israel W@r on Iran

Qatar has said dialogue remains the only viable path to ending the ongoing c@nflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, as diplomatic efforts continue to address tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

A spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Doha had received positive signals from Iran and Oman regarding the possible reopening of the strategic waterway.

He said Iran and Oman were discussing the technical arrangements for reopening the Strait of Hormuz as part of negotiations involving Iran and the United States.

Qatar, he added, was continuing to support the discussions through mediators, stressing that dialogue was essential to moving the process forward.

However, significant obstacles remain. Iran has reportedly demanded that the United States withdraw its forces from the region and provide compensation for damage caused by US and Israeli strikes.

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has said Iran should also pay compensation. He has also indicated that Washington could increase economic pressure on Tehran in an effort to force it to reach an agreement.

Iran Condemns Israeli Strikes on Southern Lebanon

Iran has condemned what it described as “b-rutal attacks” by Israel on southern Lebanon, accusing Israeli forces of k@illing and injuring civilians and d£stroying homes and critical infrastructure.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks as Israeli a-ttacks on southern Lebanon intensified in recent days. His comments were reported by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Baghaei said Tehran “strongly condemned” the Israeli attacks, which he said had caused civilian c@sualties and widespread damage to residential properties and infrastructure.

The escalation came despite the conclusion of the seventh round of Lebanese-Israeli talks in Rome on Thursday, held under United States sponsorship.

14-Year-Old Arrested Over Alleged School Sh@oting Threat in Crawford County

A 14-year-old has been arrested in Crawford County after authorities alleged that the teenager made social media posts thr£atening to carry out a sh@oting at a school.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department said investigators were alerted to several posts in which the juvenile allegedly discussed plans to a+ttack a school. One of the posts reportedly contained a photograph of a handg√n that the teenager allegedly identified as the w£apon to be used.

The thr£ats were initially detected by Sandy Hook Promise, which alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Federal investigators subsequently traced the social media posts to a residence in Crawford County.

The sheriff’s department obtained an arrest warrant and took the teenager into custody on Monday on suspicion of thr£atening to commit an act of mass v-iolence on school property. The juvenile was later taken to a d£tention facility.

Authorities also searched the residence, where they said they found several rifles and a handg√n that appeared to match the f-irearm shown in the social media post.

Officials have not released the teenager’s identity because of the suspect’s age.

Authorities also declined to disclose the school the juvenile attended or the location of the residence within Crawford County.

The investigation is ongoing.

Putin Pardons Former US Marine After More Than Four Years in Russian P-rison

Russian President Vladimir Putin has pardoned former US Marine Robert Gilman after more than four years in p-rison, following diplomatic efforts by Washington to secure his release on humanitarian grounds, US officials told Reuters.

Gilman, 32, who served in the US Marines from 2019 to 2020, had been detained in Russia since January 2022. He was arrested while travelling through the country on his way to Moldova, where he planned to take up an English-teaching job.

Russian authorities accused Gilman of being d-runk and k-icking a police officer. However, his father, Vladimir Gilman, disputed the allegations, saying his son was unwell at the time and that the officer failed to provide evidence supporting the claims during the trial.

Gilman was initially sentenced to four and a half years in p-rison. His sentence was later extended after Russian authorities accused him of ass@ulting prison staff, allegations that his advocates have denied.

His health reportedly deteriorated severely in recent months. In late June, he was transferred from a p-rison hospital to the p-sychiatric ward of a civilian hospital after entering a catatonic-like state described as a “dissociative stupor.”

Eric Lebson, a representative of Gilman’s family, said the former Marine could no longer communicate, kept his eyes closed and required feeding through a tube.

Gilman’s advocates have also accused Russian p-rison guards of mistreatment, including t-orture and the use of mind-altering d-rugs. Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed the allegations.

The US government had been pressing Moscow to release Gilman so he could receive medical treatment in the United States. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly raised his case with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting in Manila last month.

According to US officials, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov informed members of the Trump administration last week that Putin had approved Gilman’s pardon.

US and Russian officials then held negotiations over the weekend to finalise arrangements for his release.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Najeem Salaam, has pledged to end political th-uggery and restore peace across the state if elected in Saturday’s governorship election.

Salaam made the commitment during a town hall programme on Arise News, where he expressed confidence that voters would support his candidacy because of his focus on ending political v-iolence and promoting stability.

He said many residents had become frustrated with recurring incidents of political th-uggery and were seeking leadership capable of guaranteeing peace and security.

According to him, his administration would prioritise measures aimed at reducing v-iolence and creating a more secure environment for residents across the state.
