For anyone in New York City, but in particular anyone living in Uptown Manhattan, Anthony Tidd has been bringing incredible jazz to Harlem, hosting a series of pop up concerts in a chill arts space for the last couple of months. Check out at the link the incredible musicians who have already performed, people who NEVER perform uptown. He has asked Pi to curate three days next week:
Monday July21 - Silt Trio with Luke Stewart, Brian Settles, Tomas Fujiwara
Tuesday July 22 - Snark Horse with Matt Mitchell, Kate Gentile and Kim Cass
Wednesday July 23 - Breath of Air with Brandon Ross, Charlie Burnham and Tcheser Holmes.

Thanks to the critics who voted for Steve Lehman's "The Music of Anthony Braxton" ( #1) and Dan Weiss's "Unclassified Affections" ( #11) in the Francis Davis Jazz Critics Poll, Mid-Year Edition. These polls always spur me to listen to a lot of new music, which in the end is what it's all about.

We are all part of a community with a deep commitment to this extraordinary but way-too-often unappreciated musical art, and the late critic Francis Davis believed we should work together and share what we know. His poll was one important way to do just that

Unclassified Affections is out now and features a stellar lineup of musicians, and but maybe more importantly, as Dan says, “… number one, they’re just impeccable musicians. Number two, they’re very good hangs — the camaraderie. Number three, I was just kind of intrigued by that instrumentation. That was pretty much it. It’s really about the musicians — I wanted to write for these people in this configuration.“

Next Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st Be Ever Out: The Music of Henry Threadgill Threadgill is happening at

Over two nights, the music of four Henry Threadgill classic ensembles will be performed by groups consisting of original members, current collaborators and some of the City’s most adventurous musicians.

Night one features the music of Air and Very Very Circus as performed by the Air Legacy Trio and Very Very Circus Legacy Project.

Very Very Circus Legacy Project features:

Marcus Rojas, Chris Bates, Brandon Ross, Jose Davila, Miles Okazaki, Gene Lake, Noah Becker

The Air Legacy Trio features:

Marty Ehrlich, Pheeroan akLaff, Hilliard Greene

This is and Dan is one of our favorite humans. Dan, along with and has just released “Unclassified Affections.”

Dan’s history with the label goes from large band projects “Fourteen” and “Sixteen” to his metal improv band Starebaby. Along the way, our friendship and love for Dan’s compositions have grown.

We’re very excited to release “Unclassified Affections” on vinyl, CD and digitally. Available now… check it out.

We love this album and are very excited to be sharing it with the world. and “Understories” vinyl is shipping now. If ever a release of ours was made for vinyl this one is.

It reminds us of the uniquely personal sound world inhabited by “Silent Movies,” a release we should perhaps reprint on vinyl soon.

“Dálava can rock out, as its 2017 song “The Rocks Began to Crumble” proved, but Understories hews to the sound of counterculture wanderers such as Nico and Tim Buckley. Their current label, Pi Recordings, is associated with jazz, so this album is a departure for the company. But Understories exudes the same spirit of freedom as the label’s releases by Steve Lehman, Henry Threadgill, and Tyshawn Sorey, which are united by refusing the limits of genre and national boundaries.” — Steve Erickson
