This Octopus Doesn’t Just Hide in a Shell — It Carries One With It Across the Seafloor 🐙

At first glance, it looks like this octopus is simply hiding under a shell.
But look more closely—it’s actually carrying the shell with it.

The coconut octopus, Amphioctopus marginatus, is well documented using discarded coconut shells and other hard objects as temporary protection. It can gather the shell, hold it with its arms, and transport it across the seafloor until it needs shelter. �

This becomes especially useful when the animal is moving across exposed sandy areas where there may be little natural cover.
The remarkable part is that the shelter doesn’t have to stay in one place. The octopus can take its potential hiding place with it.

That’s a very different way of thinking
about an animal “using” a shelter.

How This Tiny Fish Hunts Insects Above the Water Without Ever Leaving Its Hiding Place 🎯

It looks almost impossible: the fish stays underwater while its prey is sitting safely above the surface.

But the archerfish has a remarkable hunting technique. Instead of jumping out of the water, it aims at insects on leaves or branches and shoots a concentrated jet of water from its mouth. 💦

The water strikes the insect and can knock it into the water, where the fish can quickly eat it.
What makes this especially interesting is that the fish has to account for the way light bends at the water’s surface. From underwater, the insect’s apparent position is not exactly where it seems.

Archerfish can also adjust their aim and water jet for targets at different distances, making this behavior much more than a simple splash.
That’s a fascinating example of how an animal can turn the physics of its environment into a hunting tool. 🐟
