Skeptics have proclaimed the death of print, arguing that physical books are being rendered obsolete by the convenience of e-books and the vastness of online information. However, history serves as a testament to the enduring relevance of print books. Recently, Vice President, Kamala Harris, condemned Florida’s new Black History Curriculum, which will include lessons on how “slaves developed skills” that can be used for personal benefit. This intention is to give the false impression that slavery was beneficial to enslaved people, when in fact, it was the polar opposite.

‘They insult us with the intent to gaslight us and we will not stand for it. We who share a collective experience in knowing we must honor history in our duty in the context of legacy. There is so much at stake in this moment,’ said Vice President Harris.”

“Historically, during the time of slavery, slaveholders deliberately kept slaves ignorant by denying them education and access to books. They realized knowledge and literacy could empower slaves, leading them to question their subjugation and seek liberation.

Banning books is a reflection of historical patterns and power dynamics that were prevalent during slavery and are connected to Juneteenth. One of the legacies of slavery is the perpetuation of systems and attitudes that suppress certain voices, perspectives, and histories. Although slavery was legally abolished in the United States, the suppression of marginalized voices, especially those of People of Color, LGBTQ+, and other Progressive groups continued through various means.

Today, book banning targets literature that presents alternative viewpoints, challenges the status quo, or confronts uncomfortable historical truths. These attempts to control or manipulate the narrative echo the historical mechanisms of oppression and control that were employed during slavery.”
