July 5, 1975, as featured in Steve Flink's book "The Greatest Tennis Matches of All Time," Arthur Ashe, 31, wins Wimbledon for the first time, becoming the first black man to win the men’s singles title at the All England Club, defeating Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in a shock upset. The first All-American men’s singles final at Wimbledon since 1947 was played under unique and bizarre circumstances as Connors has two lawsuits pending against his opponent – slander and liable – totaling $8 million. Writes Bud Collins in The Bud Collins History of Tennis, “Arthur's friends worried that he'd be embarrassed in the title bout as Ken Rosewall had been 12 months earlier. Their concern was unnecessary. Arthur changed speed and spin smartly, fed junk to Connors' forehand, exposing the vulnerability of that wing to paceless shots, and sliced his serves wide to Connors' backhand, exploiting the slightly limited reach of his two-handed shot.” Read
