September 13, 1970, via the "On This Day In Tennis History" book, Margaret Court becomes the second woman after Maureen Connolly in 1953 to achieve the Grand Slam, finishing her sweep of the four major titles by defeating Rosie Casals 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in the U.S. Open women’s singles final. Says Court, “I felt the pressure quite a bit at times. I played very tentative but I sort of made myself concentrate. I’m tired. I guess I haven’t realized that it’s all over.” The Grand Slam is not the only prize Court achieves at Forest Hills as she also pairs with Marty Riessen to win the mixed doubles title and teams with Judy Tegart Dalton to win the women’s doubles title to claim a rare “triple.” In the men’s singles final, 35-year-old Ken Rosewall, who at 5-foot-7 is two inches shorter than Court, wins the men’s singles title defeating Tony Roche 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. Rosewall, whose previous U.S. title in 1956 is won as an amateur, is awarded $20,000 and a new Ford Pinto car for his tournament victory. The third-set tie-break is the first to be played in a major singles final.
