A rare sighting of whales sleeping upright near Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, was recently captured by the Amami Marine Life Research Group. The whales were observed with their heads pointing towards the surface in a vertical position. This unusual sleeping behavior, known as "drift diving," was previously observed in 2008 by scientists who found the whales seemingly unaware of a passing boat. Researchers believe this behavior may be a way for them to conserve energy while resting near the surface.

The Observation:
The sighting occurred on June 23rd, approximately 15 kilometers west of Amami Oshima.

The Behavior:
The s***m whales were observed sleeping in a vertical position, with their heads near the surface, which is a form of "drift diving".

Previous Research:
This behavior was previously documented by scientists who observed s***m whales in a similar state, seemingly unaware of a nearby boat.

Energy Conservation:
It's believed that this upright sleeping position allows whales to conserve energy while resting near the surface.

Limited Research:
While this sleeping style is documented, the exact reasons for it remain a mystery to researchers.

Mitsubishi to Become World’s No. 2 Salmon Producer
Mitsubishi Corporation has announced plans to acquire part of Norway’s Grieg Seafood, investing approximately 150 billion yen in the deal. Students Rearrested for Stealing Over 100 Items at Osaka-Kansai Expo
Two Tokyo university students have been rearrested for stealing 104 items, including limited-edition black Myakumyaku plush toys, from the Osaka-Kansai Expo. The stolen goods, worth around ¥400,000, were reportedly taken for resale. Police are continuing their investigation and have already recovered about 60 items from the suspects’ homes.
