The Waitress Paid an Old Man's Bill—She Never Expected His Thank You
"I'm so sorry. I think I'm short."
"Sir, it's fine, just take your time."
"No, no, I counted this twice at home. I don't understand."
"It's okay. Really."
"I have four dollars missing. I don't — I'm so sorry, this is embarrassing."
"Sir, please don't worry about it."
"I can leave my watch. It's not worth much, but—"
"You are not leaving your watch."
Maya Torres set her notepad down on the table and crouched slightly so she was eye level with the old man in the corner booth, his hands trembling slightly as he sorted through a small pile of crumpled bills and loose coins for the third time. He was maybe eighty, wearing a thin brown coat despite the cold outside, his eyes darting between the check and his money like the numbers might change if he looked hard enough.
"Sir, look at me," Maya said gently. "It's four dollars. I've got it covered."
"I can't let you do that," he said, shaking his head. "You work hard for your money. I won't take it from you."
"You're not taking it from me," Maya said, pulling four dollar bills from her apron pocket and setting them on the table before he could argue further. "I'm giving it. That's different."
The old man stared at the money for a long moment, his jaw tight, his eyes suddenly glassy. "Why would you do that?" he asked quietly. "You don't even know me."
Maya shrugged, smiling. "Because everybody's short sometimes. And because you ordered the same soup my grandfather used to order, every single Tuesday, right up until the day he passed. Figured the universe was asking me to pay it forward a little."
The old man looked down at his bowl, mostly finished, and then back up at her, something unreadable moving behind his tired eyes.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Maya."
"Thank you, Maya," he said softly. "You have no idea what you just did."
She had no idea at all. Not yet.
