📢🆕 Check out our recently published paper "Baseline Body Composition Characteristics and Overall Survival in Young Women with Breast Cancer: Matched Case–Control Study Nested Within a Cohort"!

🔎📑 "Young women with breast cancer often have aggressive disease, and little is known about how body fat and muscle quality affect their survival. In this study, routine CT scans at diagnosis were used to measure different types of body fat and muscle in women aged 40 or younger. Higher fat stored within and around muscles and lower muscle quality were linked to worse long-term survival, whereas simple measures such as body mass index were not. These findings suggest that CT-based body composition may help radiologists and oncologists better assess risk and design future lifestyle or exercise interventions."

📖 Title: Complicated Liver Cystic Echinococcosis—A Comprehensive Literature Review and a Tale of Two Extreme Cases

🔎📑 "Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease that affects the liver in more than 70% of cases, and there is still an underestimated incidence in endemic areas. With a peculiar clinical presentation that ranges from paucisymptomatic illness to severe and possibly fatal complications, quality imaging and serological studies are required for diagnosis. The mainstay of treatment to date is surgery combined with antiparasitic agents. The surgical armamentarium consists of open and laparoscopic procedures for selected cases with growing confidence in parenchyma-sparing interventions. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is extremely useful for the diagnosis and treatment of biliary fistulas. Recent relevant studies in the literature are reviewed, and two complex cases are presented. The first patient underwent open surgery to treat 11 liver cysts, and during the follow-up, a right pulmonary cyst was diagnosed that was treated by minimally invasive surgery. The second case is represented by the peritoneal rupture of a giant liver cyst in a young woman who underwent laparoscopic surgery. Both patients developed biliary fistulas that were managed by ERCP. Both patients exhibited a non-specific clinical presentation and underwent several surgical procedures combined with antiparasitic agents, highlighting the necessity of customized treatment in order to decrease complications and successfully cure the disease."

📑 "With the increasing dominance of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, the important prospects for their application have extended to various medical fields, including domains such as in vitro diagnosis, intelligent rehabilitation, medical imaging, and prognosis. Breast cancer is a common malignancy that critically affects women’s physical and mental health. Early breast cancer screening—through mammography, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—can substantially improve the prognosis for breast cancer patients. AI applications have shown excellent performance in various image recognition tasks, and their use in breast cancer screening has been explored in numerous studies. This paper introduces relevant AI techniques and their applications in the field of medical imaging of the breast (mammography and ultrasound), specifically in terms of identifying, segmenting, and classifying lesions; assessing breast cancer risk; and improving image quality. Focusing on medical imaging for breast cancer, this paper also reviews related challenges and prospects for AI."

📝 "Myotonic dystrophy type 1 causes weakness, impaired movement, and myotonia. Little is known about MRI measures that quantify muscle fat infiltration and inflammation of the arm in these patients. We examined how these MRI measures in the forearm were related to strength, functional ability, and myotonia. Muscle fat and inflammation were greatest in specific muscles, and the anterior forearm had more muscle fat infiltration than the posterior forearm. The MRI measures correlated with measures of strength, function, and myotonia. These quantitative MRI measures in the forearm show potential to monitor the effectiveness of treatments in these patients."

🦴Article Title: Clinical Potential of Artificial Bone Scintigraphy from Early-Phase Bone Scintigraphy Using Unpaired Image-to-Image Translation in Patients with Breast Cancer: A Single-Center Prospective Study

📑 "Bone scintigraphy (BS) is widely used to detect bone metastases in patients with breast cancer; however, conventional delayed-phase bone scintigraphy (dBS) requires a prolonged waiting time after radiotracer injection. This study evaluated whether artificial intelligence (AI) could generate images comparable to dBS using early-phase bone scintigraphy (eBS) acquired shortly after injection. Artificial bone scintigraphy (aBS) images demonstrated improved bone-to-soft tissue contrast and overall image quality compared with eBS while preserving lesion-related information comparable to dBS. Although these findings do not support replacement of dBS for definitive diagnosis, they support the feasibility of aBS as an assistive delayed-phase-like image generation approach from earlier-acquired BS and provide a basis for future studies evaluating its clinical utility."

📖 "Radiofrequency wires use energy to puncture dense tissue during medical procedures. When radiofrequency energy is applied, bubbles form that block intravascular ultrasound imaging, making it difficult to see and guide the wire accurately. This study tested different methods to clear these bubbles using a bovine liver tissue model. The most effective approach used an external ultrasound probe, which reduced bubble interference by 33% and improved visualization of the wire tip. These findings suggest that widely available ultrasound equipment could improve guidance during radiofrequency wire procedures, though more testing is needed to confirm effectiveness in patients."

🔎 "Ultra-high dose-rate FLASH radiotherapy has emerged as a promising paradigm in radiation oncology. However, its physical and radiobiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated a PET system equipped with 12 detector panels to analyze the distribution of PET events during and immediately after irradiation of a proton FLASH beam, validate these events using Monte Carlo simulations, and assess the system’s 3D localization performance. The system demonstrated the ability to reliably capture PET signals both during and after beam delivery, enabling accurate coincidence detection and having the potential to support real-time monitoring of proton FLASH beam-induced positron-emitting nuclei."
