We are excited to introduce a new curated sector for this year‘s fair: «NOVUM». This sector will exclusively feature works that have never been exhibited before. These works may include entirely new creations made specifically for photo basel, or they may be bodies of work that have only recently been discovered or rediscovered. What unites these works is their debut appearance at photo basel, offering the public an ultimate premiere viewing experience (psst: we won't even tease these works online - they are only to be seen and discovered at the fair).

Keep an eye out for the «NOVUM» stickers as you visit the fair.

Celebrated euphorically at the fair in 2023, photo basel is relaunching the «Beyond Photography» sector for the second time this year. «Beyond Photography» is a curated selection of photographic positions that – as the name suggests – go beyond photography with the use of mixed media, special printing techniques, or a shift from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional. Various approaches contribute to a broadening of the medium of photography.

Keep an eye out for the «Beyond Photography» stickers as you visit the fair.

In this year's edition, photo basel presents “Spotlight Africa.” For the first time, 4 of the 41 galleries will showcase works exclusively by African artists. From documentary photographs capturing everyday life to almost abstract works offering new perspectives, African photography perfectly reflects the richness and diversity of the African continent and its diaspora. With “Spotlight Africa”, photo basel aims to promote the visibility of contemporary African photography and explicitly put these positions in the spotlight.

In this year's edition, photo basel presents the special exhibition: "Eyewitness Kurt Wyss in Dialogue with Jean Dubuffet." This exhibition offers an in-depth look at the work of the Basel-based photographer, who captured the French painter and sculptor approximately 20 times in various workspaces between 1970 and Dubuffet's death in 1985.

Kurt Wyss is deeply rooted in the art scene. He has documented cultural events such as Art Basel from its inception in 1970 to the present day, and has published numerous reports on both local and international artists. These contributions form a significant part of his extensive and diverse creative legacy.
