Like a prism, the new album Pieces of Reality by Jon Hood changes color as you move it against the light. It is only fitting that an album concerned with transformation โ both thematic and musical โ reveals such a varied palette of influences. Jon Hood embodies these shifts with ease. You might hear a strain of โ90s nostalgia shimmering like television static or the rainbow backsides of compact discs. Bold, cinematic guitar tapestries give way to slippery, danceable art-pop. This is music that lives between worlds: analogue and digital, human and alien.
On Cambio Fluido, singer Joan Seiler opens the chorus with the words โqueremos mรกsโ (โwe want moreโ), singing in her native Spanish and sounding like sunshine breaking through the songโs thick haze. The infectious, forward-driving single Loud and Clear is an uncompromisingly strong duet with Catia Lanfranchi (Kush K, Junge Eko). And there are more guest musicians on the album. Dshamilja Kalt (Melting Steine) played synthesizer and sang on DNA. Sonia Carmona can be heard as a background singer on the ever-intensifying Ocean.
Pieces of Reality may be exactly the kind of heartfelt dance music we need right now: the kind that moves more than just our feet.
