William West (about 1793-1861)
The Israelites passing through the Wilderness, preceded by the Pillar of Light (1845)
oil on canvas
The departure of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt is told in the Old Testament book of Exodus. God guided them at night, with the light from a pillar of fire. West painted a dramatic scene, with the light streaming down on tiny figures of Moses and the Israelites.
By 1845, such an epic treatment of a biblical subject was old-fashioned and it is the last of the Bristol School’s imaginary, Romantic landscapes.

Still Life with a Beer Mug
Oil paint on canvas
After serving in the First World War, Léger wanted his art to be accessible to all classes of people. He moved away from abstraction towards the stylised depiction of real objects, placing great emphasis on order, clarity and harmony. In the 1920s, he developed an interest in geometric compositions. This painting shows a still life of a workman’s lunch on a table, framed by a curtain on the right. Léger painted these elements using primary colours and in a more naturalistic style, closer to reality, in contrast with the black and white geometric patterns in the background.

Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti)
Italian, 1518-1594
Tarquin and Lucretia
1578-80
Oil on canvas
According to Roman history, the r**e of the virtuous matron Lucretia by Tarquin, son of the king of Rome, incited the people to overthrow the monarchy and establish a republic around §10 BCE. Lucretia was hailed as a hero for subsequently committing su***de in an attempt to avoid any perceived dishonor to her family. With his characteristic expressive distortions of anatomy and space and vibrant treatment of light, Tintoretto depicted one of the most violent moments of the story. As Tarquin and Lucretia struggle, a pillow flies through the air, her pearl necklace breaks apart, and the fabric and carved post of the bed’s canopy collapses around them.

Juan Batlle Planas
(Born Spain, worked Argentina)
The Message (El mensaje) 1941
Tempera on paper
The composition and title of this painting suggests that a message is being passed between the figures. Like a number of Argentinian artists, Batile Planas embraced Surrealism with enthusiasm, in part as a protest against the populist conservativism of political leader Juan Perón. Batile Planas exhibited regularly in Argentina, and his small-format paintings of the 1940s reveal a personal dream-imagery and an engagement with the work of artist Giorgio de Chirico.

Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
Lady in Black
1875-8
In a dimly lit interior, a young woman sits on a sofa placed against a window and stares into the distance. After his stay in New Orleans, Degas would often experiment with effects of ‚contre-jour‘ in his work - literally, ‚against day‘, silhouetting or backlighting. Here he poses his model against the pale light coming through a white linen curtain, turning her into a dark shape. The woman’s features and identity disappear within her contours.
