Gruyères, Switzerland

🇬🇧 Gruyères Castle is one of Switzerland's best-known medieval castles, with origins dating back to the 13th century. The Grand Tour of Switzerland sign marks Gruyères as one of the many iconic stops along Switzerland's scenic road trip route.

🇩🇪 Das Schloss Gruyères gehört zu den bekanntesten mittelalterlichen Schlössern der Schweiz und stammt aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Das Schild der Grand Tour of Switzerland zeigt Gruyères als einen der besonderen Stopps entlang der landschaftlich schönsten Reiseroute durch die Schweiz.

Because travelling isn’t about how many places you can tick off a list.
It’s about taking a deep breath of mountain air. Dip your feet in cold melting water. Finding the tiny village nobody told you about. Eating where the locals eat.
Stop rushing through Switzerland.

🇬🇧 A typical building of the Emmental region, this traditional Speicher was built in 1742. The Anne-Bäbi-Jowäger-Speicher is said to have inspired Jeremias Gotthelf for his famous novel *Anne Bäbi Jowäger*. Today, it remains a small but distinctive example of the region’s rural heritage.

🇩🇪 Ein typisches Gebäude der Emmentaler Region: Dieser traditionelle Speicher wurde 1742 erbaut. Der Anne-Bäbi-Jowäger-Speicher soll Jeremias Gotthelf zu seinem bekannten Roman *Anne Bäbi Jowäger* inspiriert haben. Heute ist er ein charakteristisches Zeugnis der ländlichen Geschichte der Region.

This morning’s view came from one of my favorite hidden gems: Schloss Landshut - Utzenstorf 🏰

Gruyères, Switzerland
The medieval old town of Gruyères has remained remarkably unchanged for centuries. First mentioned in 1138, the hilltop town is famous for its well-preserved architecture and the nearby Gruyères Castle, which has overlooked the region since the 13th century. Today, it is one of Switzerland’s best-preserved historic towns.

Die Altstadt von Gruyères hat ihren mittelalterlichen Charakter über Jahrhunderte bewahrt. Der Ort wurde erstmals 1138 erwähnt und ist bekannt für seine gut erhaltenen historischen Gebäude sowie das Schloss Gruyères, das seit dem 13. Jahrhundert über der Region thront. Heute zählt Gruyères zu den am besten erhaltenen historischen Orten der Schweiz.

Niesen, Switzerland

Known as the “Swiss Pyramid,” Niesen rises 2,362 metres above sea level. Visitors have been reaching the summit via the historic Niesen funicular railway since 1910. This photo was taken by me during an earlier trip.

Der Niesen wird aufgrund seiner markanten Form oft als «Schweizer Pyramide» bezeichnet. Seit 1910 bringt die historische Niesenbahn Besucher auf den 2'362 Meter hohen Gipfel. Dieses Foto wurde von mir bei einem früheren Ausflug aufgenommen.
