🎼 On October 1, 2018, Caroline Charrière — composer and flutist from Fribourg — passed away, leaving a profound mark on the Swiss musical scene.

Trained at the Conservatoire of Lausanne, with Aurèle Nicolet and in Manchester, she also studied composition with Jean Balissat and conducting with Hervé Klopfenstein.

After teaching flute and music theory at the Conservatoire of Fribourg, she founded in 1991 the women’s vocal ensemble Le Chœur de Jade, which she directed until her passing.

From the 2000s onward, she devoted herself fully to composition, receiving prestigious commissions (Pro Helvetia, Lucerne Festival, International Festival of Sacred Music of Fribourg…). Her wide-ranging output — from choral music to concertos and music theatre — is performed around the world and admired for its elegant sobriety and emotional depth.

As one of the first Swiss female composers to make a living from her art, she left behind a precious legacy, now carried forward by the Caroline Charrière Association.

🎼 Le 1er octobre 2018 s’éteignait Caroline Charrière, compositrice et flûtiste fribourgeoise, figure marquante de la scène musicale suisse.

Formée au Conservatoire de Lausanne, auprès d’Aurèle Nicolet et à Manchester, elle se perfectionne également en composition auprès de Jean Balissat et en direction d’orchestre avec Hervé Klopfenstein.

Après avoir enseigné la flûte et la culture musicale au Conservatoire de Fribourg, elle fonde en 1991 l’ensemble vocal féminin Le Chœur de Jade, qu’elle dirigera jusqu’à sa disparition.

Dès les années 2000, elle se consacre pleinement à la composition, recevant des commandes prestigieuses (Pro Helvetia, Lucerne Festival, Festival de Musiques Sacrées de Fribourg…). Son œuvre variée — allant du répertoire choral aux concerti, en passant par le théâtre musical — est jouée dans le monde entier et reconnue pour sa sobriété élégante et sa force d’émotion.

Première compositrice suisse à vivre de son art, elle laisse un héritage précieux que perpétue aujourd’hui l’Association Caroline Charrière.

🎉 Happy Birthday to Max Sommerhalder! 🎉

Born on September 27, 1947 in Solothurn, Max Sommerhalder is a trumpet player and teacher of international acclaim. After studying in Zurich with Henry Adelbrecht, and later in Paris, London, and Berlin, he became principal trumpet with renowned orchestras such as the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin.

As a soloist, he has performed across four continents and made important recordings, including world premieres of romantic trumpet works. From 1985 to 2013, he served as Professor of Trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, where he trained numerous prize-winning students who now play in leading orchestras worldwide.

🎉 Happy Birthday to Thierry Caens! 🎉

Born on September 24, 1958 in Burgundy, Thierry Caens is an exceptional trumpeter — international soloist, teacher, composer, and passionate creator. A student of Maurice André, he earned first prizes in trumpet and cornet at the Paris Conservatoire in the late 1970s.

His career has taken him to the world’s greatest concert halls, performing alongside renowned conductors, soloists, and composers. He has collaborated with William Sheller, Jean Ferrat, Richard Galliano, Jean-Claude Petit, and recorded over 50 film soundtracks, including the iconic score for Cyrano de Bergerac.

As a professor, ensemble conductor, writer, and founder of the Musique au Chambertin festival, he is constantly creating new projects to promote music in all its forms. A prolific composer and arranger, he published his complete catalogue with Éditions Marc Reift in 2023.

Né le 24 septembre 1958 en Bourgogne, Thierry Caens est un trompettiste d’exception, soliste international, pédagogue, compositeur et homme de projets. Élève de Maurice André, il décroche les premiers prix de trompette et de cornet au CNSM de Paris à la fin des années 1970.

Sa carrière l’a mené sur les plus grandes scènes du monde, aux côtés de chefs, solistes et compositeurs de renom. Il a collaboré avec William Sheller, Jean Ferrat, Richard Galliano, Jean-Claude Petit, et enregistré plus de 50 musiques de films, dont la bande-son du célèbre film "Cyrano de Bergerac". Professeur, chef d’ensemble, chroniqueur, fondateur du festival Musique au Chambertin, il multiplie les projets pour faire rayonner la musique sous toutes ses formes.

Compositeur et arrangeur prolifique, il publie en 2023 l’intégralité de son catalogue aux Editions Marc Reift.

🎉 Happy Birthday to Jan Valta! 🎉

Born in 1977 in Prague, Jan Valta is a Czech composer, conductor, and violinist best known for his work in film and video game music. Raised in a family of musicians – his father a composer and his mother a pianist – he began studying the violin at the age of five.

After training at the Teplice Conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, he quickly distinguished himself by winning several awards in chamber music and national student competitions.

While he has composed music for concert halls and films, Jan Valta gained international recognition for his exceptional soundtrack to the historical video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance, created in collaboration with his cousin, Adam Sporka. Praised for its authenticity and emotional depth, the score earned him the Special Achievement in Multimedia Award at the Soundtrack Poděbrady Festival in 2018.

Today, Jan Valta continues to compose for both screen and stage, blending tradition with innovation through his expressive, immersive musical language.

S’il compose pour le concert et le cinéma, c’est grâce à la bande originale du jeu Kingdom Come: Deliverance, en collaboration avec son cousin Adam Sporka, qu’il acquiert une reconnaissance internationale. Saluée pour son authenticité historique et sa richesse émotionnelle, cette musique lui vaut en 2018 le Prix spécial de la création multimédia au Festival Soundtrack Poděbrady.

Aujourd’hui, Jan Valta continue de composer pour l’image et la scène, en mêlant tradition musicale et modernité avec sensibilité.

🎉 Happy Birthday to Jirka Kadlec! 🎉

Born on September 19, 1979 in Ostrava, Jiří Kadlec – also known under his pen name Jirka Kadlec – is an accomplished trombonist and arranger.

He studied at the Janáček Academy and the University of Freiburg under Branimir Slokar, winning several trombone competitions before becoming principal trombone of the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 2013.

Today, he works as an arranger for Éditions Marc Reift and plays principal trombone in the Marc Reift Orchestra. He arranged all the tracks on his solo album Sunday Mood, and has since recorded four more albums, available on our website.

In memory of Jean Balissat (1936–2007)

🎼 On September 15, 2007, Jean Balissat passed away, leaving behind a powerful legacy as one of Switzerland’s most influential composers, conductors, and teachers.

Trained in Lausanne and Geneva, he taught orchestration and composition at various Swiss conservatories and conducted major ensembles such as the Landwehr of Fribourg and the Brass Band Fribourg. As president of the Swiss Wind Band Association (ASM) and later of SUISA, he worked tirelessly to promote and support Swiss music.

His works reflect a unique voice — seeking to bridge the gap between contemporary expression and amateur music traditions, always in service of dramatic and narrative power.

🎶 To this day, his music continues to inspire and resonate.

Hommage à Jean Balissat (1936–2007)

🎼 Le 15 septembre 2007 s’éteignait Jean Balissat, figure majeure de la musique suisse. Compositeur, chef d’orchestre et pédagogue, il a marqué des générations de musiciens par son exigence artistique, sa curiosité stylistique et son attachement à la transmission.

Formé à Lausanne et à Genève, il fut à la fois enseignant dans plusieurs conservatoires romands et chef d’ensembles emblématiques comme la Landwehr de Fribourg ou le Brass Band Fribourg. Président de l’ASM (1986–1990), puis de la SUISA, il a activement œuvré pour la reconnaissance et le rayonnement de la musique suisse.

Auteur d’une œuvre riche et contrastée, Jean Balissat s’est attaché à réconcilier modernité et accessibilité, notamment dans ses compositions pour orchestre d’harmonie, mais aussi pour orchestre symphonique, orgue, quatuor ou ensemble.

🎶 Aujourd’hui encore, sa musique continue de faire vibrer musiciens et auditeurs.

🎉 Happy Birthday to Stanley Friedman! 🎉

A brilliant composer, conductor, and trumpeter, Stanley Friedman has left his mark across the musical world. After earning his doctorate in composition from Eastman School of Music, his works were premiered by top ensembles such as the Ensemble InterContemporain, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Music Society, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

As a professional trumpeter, he performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and served as principal trumpet with orchestras in Israel, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. His acclaimed album The Lyric Trumpet earned New Zealand’s Record of the Year Award in 1989.

Stanley is also known worldwide for his iconic solo work "Solus", performed at major international trumpet competitions.

He continues to compose, conduct, perform, and teach trumpet at the Interlochen Arts Academy (USA).

🎉 Happy Birthday to Francis Orval! 🎉

Born in Liège, Belgium, Francis Orval is an internationally renowned horn player, soloist, and teacher. He held principal horn positions with major orchestras such as the Belgian National Orchestra and Radio-Télé Luxembourg, and taught at the conservatories of Liège and Luxembourg before continuing his career in the United States, where he became a citizen in 1983.

A celebrated performer on both modern and natural horn, he has appeared worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician, and regularly gives masterclasses and serves on international competition juries. He currently teaches at the Musikhochschule Trossingen in Germany and collaborates with La Chapelle Musicale Reine Élisabeth.

His recordings include works by Brahms, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Mozart, and several Belgian composers. In 1987, he won First Prize at the Louise D. McMahon International Competition in Oklahoma.

Son importante discographie comprend des œuvres de Brahms, Schumann, Mozart, ainsi que de nombreux compositeurs belges. En 1987, il reçoit le Premier Prix du Concours Louise D. McMahon en Oklahoma.
