There’s been a trend going around on social media asking ChatGPT to create an exact replica of an image without making any changes (and then having it do it again and again). Some results have been pretty wild. We decided to try it out ourselves on a few distinctive images … and got some interesting results.

1. Image one: Driving toward homogeneity. A parking lot filled with multi-colored cars turns into an eerie set of identical cars. By the end, everything becomes simplified, even the license plates are the same. We lose the detail of the original photo.

2. Image two: Highlighting brands. A blurry brand becomes a recognizable logo. Despite the blurred, colorless original, the generations turn it into the McDonald’s logo. It’s a decisive move toward a known brand.

3. Image three: Finding form in the abstract. In this Jackson Po***ck Painting, an abstract piece of art morphs into a recognizable shape by the end: A face.

So why doesn’t ChatGPT just recreate an image when asked? It has to do with how these models are designed. ChatGPT generates new images based on learned patterns, not by copying pixels. Beyond that, there are also built-in copyright and legal restrictions. This experiment is almost like a telephone game for ChatGPT - each iteration is a bit further away from the initial image and the patterns that result can be revealing of underlying processes and training data bias.

One of MHM’s fellows decided to experiment with this trend on many different images. To make testing more streamlined, he designed a code to automate the process.

Leave, leap, get uncomfortable. You’ll build Mostly Human Media to tell the story of technology. Along the way, the most human thing will happen: you’ll fall in love, you’ll get married, you’ll become a mom. It’s worth it. Trust me.

WE WON A WEBBY!!!!!! As someone who has covered internet culture for years … this feels extra special. represent the best of the internet.

A year ago, our team at set out to explain the future of disinformation through an empathetic & human lens. We created a social first piece based off of a demo we did with the Center for Humane Technology called “My Deepfake Relationship with Mark Zuckerberg” … thankfully that relationship was a deepfake (seriously) but the reality is we are entering a deepfake world where perception can become reality.

Big props to our team who made this happen! , .tonic , , .stadler. We’re honored to be in the company of , ,  ...and the creators of the Skibidi Toilet universe (among others).

The piece “My Deepfake Relationship with Mark Zuckerberg” was nominated for a Webby Award! It’s also up for the Webby People’s Choice award - which means you can vote for it as your favorite overall! Link to vote in bio!!
The nominee: An eye-opening demo that imagines a future where reality and fiction blur ... one where AI is used to spin an entire deepfake reality around someone. It’s a future we’ve seen emerge in the past year since we first shared this piece. And the questions it poses feel even more urgent today: how do we decipher what’s real ... and why does it matter? Full piece pinned at the top of the page.

Welcoming this little human to the Mostly Human team. Charlie Lev Aneurin Jones will one day be better than his parents at all things tech. He says thank you to his mom’s friends who sent him a book on quantum computing & engineering. As soon as he graduates from "Goodnight Moon," we’ll get him started 🤖🙏
