Amidst the ongoing escalation of geopolitical conflicts and threats to international economy and world order, 195 professional biographical counselors from the four corners of the Earth gathered in Cuenca, Spain, for the Worldwide Biography Conference, May 20-24, 2026. The biennial event was already been held in Dornach, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Finland, Japan, and Spain for its 13th iteration. The 14th will be held in Brazil in 2028.

Leaving Our Comfort Zone • Gilda Bartel

The first train is already delayed, and I’m waiting on a crowded platform in Germany, on a hot Friday in June. So many soldiers! I haven’t seen that in a long time. Female soldiers, too. They stand alone and don’t talk to anyone. They look serious. They’re young. Faces with their whole lives ahead of them. The last time I saw such a large military presence was when I was a child: fighter jets roaring across the summer sky, tanks on the sparsely traveled highways of East Germany in the 1980s, the “Lied gegen die Neutronenbombe” [Song Against the Neutron Bomb] in music class. I can’t find a seat on the train and end up in the corridor, which isn’t air-conditioned. I sit on the floor with two female soldiers surrounded by suitcases and backpacks. When the heat becomes almost unbearable, one of them says, “It’s my job, after all, to put up with this.” Images from war movies flash through my mind. My brain realizes, with a sense of unease, that these two young women could really end up in a trench. I reply, “Mine too!”

The more humanity evolves, the more absurd war seems: absurd because it disregards all the lessons of the past; absurd because it mocks our ideals of humanitarianism, solidarity, and even ecology; absurd because technological and economic developments make it increasingly self-destructive and dangerous for all humanity.

No one can win a war anymore—we are all losers. That is why this week’s issue once again addresses the question of war with the intention of encouraging listening and dialogue: the only means of resolving conflict. The path of the heart is where the real spiritual battle is decided today—and where its solution also lies.

On August 12, 2026, a major celestial event invites us to engage in both outer and inner perception. It is the solar eclipse, whose umbra will travel from Siberia, through Reykjavik, to northern Spain. Much like sunlight, our perception enters the world and enables us to engage with it. And what do we perceive when the light of day is taken away? The “dark side of the sun” was once accessible only to the initiated. Today, perhaps we can all gain some insight into the “other side” of our perception.

“Fairy tales bring people together. Regardless of where we come from, how old we are, or our individual viewpoints and attributes, most of us share the experience of having heard fairy tales, in one way or another.

[…] In “Faërie” we may enter a “secondary world” created by the author’s fantasy—a particular form of imagination that should not be dismissed as mere inventiveness. It is a specific capacity of the human spirit closely related to the gift of language."

Edgar Morin: Thinker of Complexity, Friend of Humanity • Bodo von Plato

Edgar Morin lived a very long life—104 years—and made a tremendous contribution to all humanity. Born Edgar Nahoum in Paris, 1921, he died there on May 29 as Edgar Morin. Paris was where he belonged intellectually, but the whole world was the arena of his intellectual and human endeavors, for he was able to think and to think complexly.
