At Fantoche in Baden we assigned the second Flying Anidoc Award to Shadows by Rand Beiruty.

This short film will be in our selection, keep your eyes open: soon we will announce the complete festival program!

Here is our jury's statement:

By intertwining a profound interview with the imagery of a quintessential non-place like an airport, the film carries us through the protagonist’s journey of inner liberation, revealing the resilience of a life far too young to have endured such violence. We believe this film will reach thousands of passengers in flight, leaving them with translucent colors that layer the shadows of the past with the shapes of a future of self-determination.

We picked a heartwarming short film from our festival's second edition.
The young protagonist, Misha, needs a liver transplant and his father gifts us with the images of the days before and after the operation. We are allowed to watch Misha's games, hear his questions about the illness and maybe spend a tear when, after the operation, he asks if he can be a donor too.

How far can you go for the ones you love? Geographically and spiritually, take a moment to think. On the surface the short film we're recommending this week looks like an ironic portrait of a middle-aged couple dealing with a safari worst-case scenario. But Troyer and Linda wouldn't be there if it weren't for their relationship. Being there for your loved one even though when it gets hard and mental health issues enter the equation can lead you to the strangest places. Yet you'll be there, and hopefully you'll make it through accidents, dehydration and fire.

Possibly nobody wishes to let down the family expectations, but at the same time nobody should fight rejection in a family. "Will you look at me" by Shuli Wang focuses on the tension between the desire to be loved for who we are, beyond judgment, and the traditional values that can't accept any personal path over social expectations. The documentary brings us the conversation between the director (and protagonist ) and his mother, an even violent exchange on q***r identity and love. We selected this short film for its narrative quality, an apparently easy going camera style matched with edgy dialogues, but most of all empathy guided our choice and we hope you'll feel the same. "Can you go to therapy for climate change or is that ridiculous?"

That's the premise of "Everything wrong and nowhere to go" where the director, Sindha Agha, exposes herself as a subject in discomfort, a mirror for many of us in these troubled times.
The sense of anxiety caused by climate change might be one of the most common experience, but it feels like we're not yet used to speak up about it. The fragmented images and the therapist words serve as the embankment for the director's emotional stream, a river where to plunge and recognise how it is not ridiculous to feel overwhelmed by the burning surroundings.
We wish you'll watch this short film and find it as intense as we did and that you'll like to share it with the ones you love:

Growing up with a single parent is not an uncommon experience, yet it could be still appointed as problematic. The director of this animated doc experienced it first handed: she was raised by her mother alone, who managed to carry on her business in a male dominated field at the same time.
Chinese zodiac signs play a role in shaping the appearances of the characters, until the protagonists overcome them and regain a human resemblance beyond social stereotypes.
We loved the intimate and equally straightforward dialogue between the director and her mother, the way the hand-drawn lines vibrate carrying us in the situations they shared. As simple as it might look - charcoal on paper and off screen dialogue - "Tiger & Ox" addresses a loaded theme without too many filters and with a sense of reconciliation.
