Jackson's Bodyguard of 10 Years Reveals a Chilling Truth About the King of Pop
When we hear the name Michael Jackson, what image comes to mind? The King of Pop, captivating millions with his legendary Moonwalk and electrifying performances on stage, right? But behind that dazzling and glamorous world lay a very different reality.
Can we even imagine that the man who was adored by millions, whose name alone could send fans into a frenzy anywhere in the world, was actually a deeply vulnerable and lonely human being?
Recently, Matt Fiddes, who served as Michael Jackson's personal bodyguard for ten years (from 1999 to 2009), appeared on The Art of Dialogue podcast and shared several fascinating yet heartbreaking revelations. Listening to his story makes one wonder: how could someone loved by so many end up feeling so alone?
Today, let's explore the darker side of Michael Jackson's glittering life through the account of the man who stood by his side for a decade.
According to Matt Fiddes, Michael Jackson was both one of the most celebrated people in the world and one of the loneliest. On stage, he was a king adored by crowds. But once the show ended and he returned to his hotel room, he became a completely different person.
On stage, he ruled the world. Off stage, he was, according to Fiddes, a gentle and lonely man struggling with profound isolation.
The world's biggest actors, musicians, and politicians all wanted a photo with Michael and wanted others to know they were associated with him. However, Matt says that most people were attracted to Michael's fame rather than Michael the person. While he was privately struggling with overwhelming problems, there were very few genuine friends who would simply ask, "Michael, how are you doing?"
During the final years of his life, Jackson reportedly suffered from numerous health issues. In addition to physical pain, he was emotionally affected by intense media scrutiny, public criticism, accusations, and relentless pressure. Being constantly followed by cameras and having every small action turned into a headline became increasingly difficult for him to endure.
According to Fiddes, although Jackson smiled in public and waved to his fans, there was a great deal of sadness hidden behind that smile.
Many people publicly claimed to love him. Yet when Michael was at his most vulnerable and going through some of the hardest periods of his life, very few people reached out privately to check on him, support him, or offer comfort.
On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson passed away at the age of 50, shocking the entire world. What happened afterward, according to Fiddes, was striking. Many celebrities and acquaintances who had not been present during his difficult times appeared on television and in newspapers praising him, expressing how much they loved him, and portraying themselves as close friends.
It is this perceived hypocrisy that Fiddes speaks about with disappointment today. He asks a simple question:
"All the people who cried for Michael after he died and organized tributes in his honor—where were they when he was fighting through loneliness and the most difficult times of his life?"
Fiddes believes that even a simple phone call or genuine friendship from some of these people might have made a meaningful difference in Michael's life. The lack of that support and the absence of true companionship remain a source of sadness and regret for him.
The story carries a broader lesson: not every wealthy, famous, or seemingly perfect life is a happy one. Sometimes the person smiling in front of the world may be crying alone at night.
Another important lesson is that love, appreciation, and respect should be given while people are still alive. Posting tributes, writing long messages, or saying "RIP" after someone has passed away cannot replace the support and kindness that could have been offered when they needed it most.
Matt Fiddes' reflections provide a glimpse into a side of Michael Jackson's life that many people never saw. The story of a legendary artist who carried the weight of his crown while struggling with loneliness remains a powerful reminder for all of us.
What do you think? Do we often realize people's true value only after they're gone?
