Lucía Lacarra: An International Ballet Icon in Switzerland!
The International Ballet Globe Festival presents an unforgettable moment: on November 6, at the Métropole Theatre in Lausanne, the audience will experience the grace of Spanish superstar Lucía Lacarra — winner of the “Ballet Oscar” Benois de la Danse, the Nijinsky Prize, and the title Dancer of the Decade — followed on November 7 by an exceptional performance at the Musical Theater Basel.
Her partner and choreographer, Matthew Golding, former Principal of The Royal Ballet in Covent Garden, together with twelve artists of the Lucia Lacarra Ballet company, will present the ballet Lost Letters — a work inspired by a true story.
In difficult times, English soldier Frank Bracey wrote to his wife, calling her “the best girl on earth” and thanking her for the love that warmed his heart. Yet behind his gratitude lay a foreboding — he knew he might never return home. In his final letter, he begged the impossible: that she find the strength to live, to be happy, and to love again. “Keep our love in your heart, but do not lock yourself in loneliness,” he wrote.
What if that letter had never reached its destination? This question became the foundation of Lost Letters: a choreographic memory of millions of trembling farewells, words that joined souls, and lines that became last testaments. On stage comes alive the story of a woman who waited and believed, and a man who left only thinking of protecting her from despair.
Music and dance weave sorrow, hope, loss, and luminous remembrance — turning into pages of a diary written in tears.
Lucía Lacarra, born in Zumaia, Spain, has shone on the stages of San Francisco, Munich, Dortmund, and Marseille. Her art has been honored with the highest awards, including Benois de la Danse, the Nijinsky Prize, and Spain’s National Prize. At the Kremlin she was named Dancer of the Decade. Each of her roles is a confession, and in Lost Letters her dance embodies the strength and fragility of the feminine soul.
Matthew Golding, a Canadian-born dancer and choreographer, trained at The Royal Ballet School in London, was Principal at Dutch National Ballet and The Royal Ballet, and has performed with the Mariinsky, English National Ballet, and National Ballet of Canada. Awarded the Dutch Zwaan and nominated for Benois de la Danse, today he also creates his own choreographies, transforming letters into a scenic poem about love, waiting, and farewell.
Together with twelve artists of Lucia Lacarra Ballet, they create an ensemble where every dancer’s story flows into a single artistic voice. Lost Letters is a ballet that speaks to everyone, reminding us of memory, loyalty, and the belief that even letters once lost may still reach the heart.
