A virtual reality chronicling the last days of Christian de Laubadere in his magnificent studio in Shanghai, China. This expatriate artist has lived abroad for almost 20 years. Laubadere’s unique work is inspired by the inevitable clash between East and West and exposes a man who lived and breathed in a time of extreme change. A change that culminated in his sudden departure from China and the destruction of his studio in 2018, leaving behind the memories and reflections of a person who integrated and explored the peculiarities of two rich and complex cultures.
This project was carried out by the partnership between Dirty Bacon and João Inada, brazilian VR and traditional documentary filmmaker, researcher, and journalist based in Shanghai, China. This film is a continuation of João's work aimed at revealing artists' studios around the world in virtual reality and revealing the inner reflection of painters, poets and sculptors.
“ My partnership with Salar Shahna was essential to bring this project to fruition. From the original idea, with this virtual reality experience, we have come to a true declaration on the effects of modernity, artistic ambition and the passage of time. " __João Inada
To perceive this fabulous studio that was both home and workplace, VR was the only medium capable of transmitting in volume the true beauty and details of a world built over time by an artist who collected and produced unique pieces. The VR medium has strengths unmatched to this day, thanks in particular to the immediacy of the aesthetic and sensory experience. This is an opportunity to bring audiences closer to the privacy of artists, workplaces, places where detail and art can only be truly felt through a physical - and now virtual - presence.
